Where does personal responsibility enter into the equation? I have no idea what my former colleague’s insurance situation is, but I do know – given her profession – that she has access to employer sponsored insurance. She is married, but I don’t know what he does or if he has access to insurance for his family. In my lengthy time with the same employer, I know that we were encouraged to buy insurance for things that health insurance didn’t cover. I never bought that insurance, but I knew it was available and I understood the risk of passing it up.
However, thank you all for the conversation and thank you for offering your perspectives. The bottom line is that I do hope that she gets better and is able to return to the classroom and continue to be an effective teacher for our community. I will be making a contribution to her GoFundMe.
