I saw Clockwork Orange once in high school, and again, after reading the screenplay, in college. That was over thirty years ago, and I’ve never needed to see it again. Same with 2001.
I LOVE the performances in The Killing and Lolita and Paths of Glory, and both of them are on my To See Again list, near the top.
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket
Eyes Wide Shut
A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove
Out of what you listed, I believe these are all I’ve seen, so I tried to rank them accordingly. Caveats: I only watched Strangelove when I was too young to get the jokes, so… And Eyes Wide Shut–I have to be in a certain mood. But it fits that mood quite well.
This has touched me, and I have crappily analyzed the film, the novel, and King himself during that era, and…I don’t think Kubrick was too far off. Don’t know if I can give any more intelligent particulars at this hour, but I’ve felt that Kubrick simply saw through (too early?) to the real Jack. And even the novel mentions quite a few times how scary Daddy really was, even if he had some good moments.
I see no disconnect. Kubrick did a good job. I think King was alarmed by how scary he (King) was at the time. You dig?
Thinking about the movies, there are none that I dislike. Eyes Wide Shut might have been the weakest, but it had its points. I found Barry Lyndon slow, but it was beautiful, especially when seen in a theater where you could get the full effect. I’m too young (heh heh) to appreciate the setting of Lolita. But I’d happily watch any one of these again.

I liked all of his films except The Shining. I really disliked that film, mostly because it’s nothing like the book and I really liked the book. Well, that and Nicholson chews the scenery so much I could never take hm seriously.
OTOH, I found that throwing Sellers in degraded the movie significantly. Someone who had the tone of Langella in the remake would have worked a lot better.
I actually stopped going to the cinema with any regularity or enthusiasm after Full Metal Jacket (what a disappointment! The New Kubrick turned out to be two films tacked together, the first of which had been done over and over again, and the second had been done so much better in ‘Halo Jones’ [‘2000AD’ comic strip] by Alan Moore).
