What are your Top Five Woody Allen Movies?

Yes, he has a credit related to that, which is why the film comes up in that auto-generated list, via IMDB.

Out of sheer laziness, and instead of asking for nominations for a poll, I just went with what I thought would be a list to select from. If the items on the list aren’t actually Woody’s work, please don’t select them as your favorites.

Yes, I just went with my top five favorites (yes, I just so happen to regularly tabulate my top five Woody movies–doesn’t everyone?!), which also so happened to be on Zeldar’s list.

Annie Hall is my favorite movie, period. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen it.
Nest would definitely be Hannah and Her Sisters, followed by Crimes and Misdemeanors.

After those, it’s harder to decide which other two to add, but they would definitely be from the 1977-1989 period.

A few I hated: Match Point, Celebrity, Small Time Crooks

Annie Hall
Manhattan
Hannah and Her Sisters
Crimes and Misdemeanors
The Front

Waiting for Annie-Xmas’s response to this thread…

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask
Annie Hall
Casino Royale
Sleeper
Zelig

I would have voted for What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, but it’s not on the list.

Take The Money And Run
Sleeper
Annie Hall
The Front
Hannah And Her Sisters

How could you forget Curse of the Jade Scorpion? From 2001, but fits the profile of the great Woody Allen classics: Allen screenplay and direction and with him as the main character, and co-production by Jack Rollins and Charles Joffe. Stars Woody, Helen Hunt, Dan Akroyd, and with Charlize Theron putting in an appearance.

Actually, I wouldn’t pick it for my top five but it was thoroughly enjoyable.

As mentioned, you also didn’t list What’s Up, Tiger Lily? which I believe is Allen’s first venture into moviemaking. A little dated now but still pretty cute.

For my top five, I’m sure Woody Allen and his diehard fans will all hate me, but my top five have to be his old classic comedies just because he was such a comic genius, like no one else before or since, much as I appreciate many (not all) of his more recent efforts.

So top 5 in no particular order:

Sleeper
Take the Money and Run
Bananas
Love and Death
Zelig

  1. Annie Hall
  2. Take the Money and Run
  3. Crimes and Misdemeanors
  4. The Purple Rose of Cairo
  5. Radio Days
  1. Love and Death
  2. To Rome with Love
  3. Manhattan
  4. Midnight in Paris
  5. Annie Hall
