What aren't mozzarella sticks as good as they used to be?

Huh. I thought we were talking about the fried ones as well.

So sorry.

For string cheese or cheese in an hand held shape the more it costs the better it probably is.
We never get that because the kids just stuff it in their mouths w/o tasting. So what’s on sale or store brand is good enough.

I eat 2 Frigo Cheese-Heads string cheeses every morning for breakfast and they are still quite good. I don’t know how long “used to be” is, but I’ve been enjoying them for at least 10 years now.

I have gotten a couple bad bags! It was surreal, they were just randomly “off” - but bitter tasting, as if they had gone bad. Not just “sligtly less good than I remember them.” It has happened with more than one package. I emailed the company and got some coupons.

Light cheese sticks are absolutely vile. And I haven’t really tried other brands of cheese sticks…I’m afraid they will be not as good. So I stick with the good ones (at least to me).

Being from Da Magikal Land O’ Cheez, I prefer deep-fried cheese curds instead.

Cheese Curds, Booyah & beer,
That’s what I like to hear.
I may be kinda pokey,
But I say “okee-dohkee!”
To cheese curds, booyah & beer.

All together now…

Same – well, not every morning. But I usually have one or two with lunch. The Frigo brand really is pretty good. I can get big bags of them at Costco. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad bag.

Sargento also makes good ones, albeit more expensive ones.

And those are individual serving of string cheese. “Mozzarella sticks,” in this part of the world, refers to the deep-fried breaded chunks of (usually) mozzarella. Arby’s mozz sticks are good, so are Jack in the Box’s. Applebee’s has some really good ones but between the long wait times and outrageous prices we rarely eat there.

“Private capital” seems to be the bogeyman for everything. Maybe that’s it?

Honestly, though “at home” mozzarella sticks have always sucked. More concerning is the restaurant mozzarella sticks, which seem to suck now, and “private equity” seems to be the LCD.

As did I. As long as I’m here… Burger King used to have pretty decent ones but they change from Mozzarella sticks to Mozzarella “Fries”. They are much thinner now and not as good. Maybe it’s bias, but I don’t think the cheese is as good.

Dude, wait, what!?

I tried the Frigo Cheesehead string cheese. I liked it, and in fact, I found the “original” (made with skim milk) to actually be tastier than the whole milk version, which surprised me, but I think the extra pinch of salt they add to the original recipe makes it extra tasty.

In our house, any time something goes wrong, we blame it on the patriarchy, capitalism, or supply chain issues. So don’t rule those out.

Sargento has new smoked mozzarella sticks. I didn’t realize what I picked up, but…Amazing!

I thought the side to get at Arby’s was their curly fries. I’ve never tried their mozz sticks; mebbe next time I go I’ll get a small RB & a mozz sticks to go along w/ my curly fries.

Dollar Tree had little blocks of ‘cheddar’ emblazoned with the words to the effect that they now contained REAL CHEESE. Not how much, but now we knew it wasn’t all…whatever. Casein?
