I’m not clear from the OP what the limitations are on “artist”. If musical artists are allowed then I would go with Siouxsie Sioux. I don’t know how well the Bill Grundy interview is known outside the UK - the (unknown) Sex Pistols swore on TV and an outraged right wing press made them famous overnight. Siouxsie was part of the gang being interviewed, dressed to shock. There from the very start. Then she created The Banshees, made great music and, uniquely, never lost the faith.
Non-musical? Grayson Perry. Ceramicist, cross dresser, TV personality and more, he has the knack of annoying the people that you most want to see annoyed. And long may he carry on.
Hmmm. Did you ask specifically because painting, as an art form, hasn’t been particularly prominent in recent times? Possibly Tracy Emin defines my time, but she isn’t really known for painting. I guess I have to go with Banksy. And canvas ain’t his thing either….
