I forgot, I saw James Brown twice also.
I forgot about them. They must be tied with Heart and Saves the Day for my second most seen band, probably 7 or 8 times. Unfortunately, one time I saw them twice in a row because since they used to always play deep cuts from their first two albums, and memorized entire albums for Neveenders, I thought that they were the type of band who would play a different set list each night, but they played the exact same setlist both nights. Now, on the other hand, it wasn’t horrible because they did play the big two from Silent Earth. (title track and Favour)
Cold Chisel 12 times, Aussie rock and roll royalty. After the lead singer Jimmy Barnes went solo I have seen him about 5 times.
Next would be U2 with only 4 shows.
The only nationally known band I’ve seen multiple times is Dave Matthews, he used to play a regular Tue night gig.
Indeed. You’ll never hear me complain of hearing any song from that album too many times. I’ve been holding out hope that they might do an aniversary tour for that album similar to the one they did for Second Stage Turbine Blade a couple years ago.
The Kinks
David Bowie
The Kodo Drummers
Another Dead Head here. Probably around 40+ shows counting solo acts. Living in the Bay Area for four years helped a lot with that. Others seen at least five times would include Allman Brothers, Ramones, Neil Young (with and without CSNY), Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan. A bunch of other bands multiple times or once. If I had the money that I’ve spent on concerts over the years, I’d probably be able to retire now.
No bands. Individual performers, though:
The late Michael Hedges, 3 times.
Al Stewart, 2 times.
Dave Nachmanoff, once. I’m not counting his being Al’s guitarist, I’m talking about a show where he was the lead.
I’ve said this a number of times. But I can hear the opening notes of any number of songs and instantly be plunked into some very, very happy memories.
I feel bad for my kid. I saw the Dead over 50 times, Arlo Guthrie about 25 times, Bob Dylan more than a dozen, Eric Clapton about the same, Pink Floyd 6 or 7, in big venues paying $20 - $40 per ticket. When I started seeing these shows I was making $7 or $8/per hour.
My son works now for $8.25 an hour but the cheapest seats at the concerts he wants to go to are upwards of $75.
Pearl Jam 30+ and counting… the premier touring band of our time…
If you haven’ seen it yet, you may want to read How did Pearl Jam become Generation X’s Grateful Dead?.
I have a few issues with the article, but it’s surprisingly well written nonetheless. It’s major flaw is somewhat obvious to any head: the *Grateful Dead *was Gen X’s Grateful dead. Someone writing about the band may think that they’re a baby boomer band, but all ages were equally represented—in the 90s, the bulk of the audience were heads from 15 to 25.
Another issue is the, wait, what, Pearl Jam? It’s not that the criteria the author used to single them out isn’t spot on (and the article refreshingly stayed away/acknowleged that this wasn’t a musical comparison), it’s that there are a wide range of bands that fit the description–bands that have a much larger fan base. Maybe the author didn’t want to add another Dead/Phish comparison to the pile, but from Widespread to SCI, there are a lot of bands that could be substituted for PJ.
Takes nothing away from PJ, of course, and it’s a good article despite my being a bit picayune.
And still no marriage proposal?
I’ve seen Trucks about that many times in either his own band or ABS or with his lovely wife. I’m pissed that I missed the Clapton tour he backed.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd five times.
Many many years ago I attended 4 or more YES concerts.
Mark Selby who is not well known but has penned a few Grammy songs about 10 times. He seems to make it to at least one local city festival in my area in the summer and it’s always nice to hear him play.
Unfortunately I was not born yet when the Smiths were around.
I’ve seen Morrissey 4 times (he canceled for what would have been my 5th and 6th times). I’ll be seeing Johnny Marr for the second time in November.
Aside from that I’ve seen No Doubt three times and Garbage twice.
