If a film or book was a person and you could marry it, which book/film would it be?
For me,
Book: The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson - sure our children would probably run to fat and not be all that attractive, but by god they’d be intelligent!
Film: Pan’s Labyrinth - any film that can make me feel okay about dying can’t be bad. It could give me cuddles at night time when I’m feeling sad and need a hug.
Wait, *marry *marry? If I could bring a book to life as a person and *marry *the result?
I’d have to go with this book.
Film: “What Dreams May Come.” I tend to agree with its new-age-esque view of the afterlife. Or maybe “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” because it seems true to life.
Book: Maybe The Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice Cream God, a book by the guy who wrote Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? Synopsis of Unoriginal: a Catholic teenager is sifting through what the nuns and priests are telling him, trying to figure out what’s real and what’s BS. He meets a gas station owner/mechanic, Caepan. Caepan says he could do a better job than God. So they begin a dialogue of sorts, with the boy asking questions and Caepan answering them, via written notes, though neither ever speaks of them directly. Meanwhile, the boy is meeting these girls…
Or maybe The World According to Garp. Life’s just too bizarre sometimes.
Book: The Perilous Gard, by Elizabeth Marie Pope. I’ve read this book at least a hundred times since I was eleven, and reading it now, I can tell it strongly influenced the development of my personality. If it were human, it and I would be my life’s One True Pairing. (It would also probably be embodied as a woman, so it would be a gay marriage, but I live in Massachusetts, so… ;))
Film: Probably The Thin Red Line. Love at first sight.
If I weren’t already married to someone who probably isn’t into polygamy, I could marry The Princess Bride (both the book and the film). It makes me laugh, it warms my heart, it has aged well, and I sure wouldn’t mind waking up next to it for the next few decades.
