What borders (e.g. international borders, US state lines, Canadian provincial lines, etc.) have you crossed on foot?
Note that this requires that you cross the line UNAIDED by a vehicle. This is not a question about border crossings in general. Being on a train or a bus and taking a token step forward as the vehicle crosses the line DOESN’T COUNT!
I will also permit swimming across a border, such as swimming across the Delaware River from Pennsylvania to New Jersey.
Walking over a bridge is fine.
Bicycles are a gray area. If you want to put a border that you crossed by bicycle, you can list it, just state that you crossed it by bicycle.
County or city lines are another thing, and for the purpose of this question, don’t count unless the crossing was somehow very significant (e.g. if you braved a dangerous cave system to cross a county line by foot in order to get something substantial done, it’s ok to list.
Me:
Crossed with a specific purpose in mind:
VA-DC
VA-MD
Crossed for the fun of it, or just as part of a stroll or for excercise:
In Australia:
NSW-QLD (We once stayed for a week at a hotel in Coolangatta about a block from the border. The nearest supermarket was in Tweed Heads. What made in interesting was that it was summer, so the two towns were in different time zones.)
One of the golf courses in the Myrtle beach area is actually spread out over both North and South Carolina. When you play it you will criss-cross both states during your round.
Tennessee-North Carolina border in Smoky Mountain National Park. I was on my honeymoon with my ex-husband and we decided to hike up to Clingman’s Dome. We stopped for a while to rest at Newfound Gap (I think that’s the name) since neither of us were really in shape for hiking. The state line runs right through Newfound Gap.
Interesting question. Since crossing the DC-MD border as a child, I don’t recall a single one. Right now I live half a mile from the RI-MA border, but never crossed it on foot. Maybe I’ll do it just to double the number.
I’d have to think about it some to give a complete answer, but here’s a fun one: I have crossed the Pennsylvania-Maryland, Maryland-Virginia and Virginia-West Virginia borders all on the same walk.
My home town is right on the Louisiana-Texas border. The border is a not so huge river at that point so we used to swim back and forth from one state to another. I walked across the bridge many times as well. I went to grad school right on the New Hampshire-Vermont border. Same thing. There has to be a few more but I can’t think of them right now.
U.S. - Canada
U.S. - Mexico
California - Arizona
California - Nevada
Nevada - Arizona
Arizona - New Mexico - Colorado - Utah (simultaneously!)
Nebraska - Kansas
Italy - Vatican City
U.S. - UK (OK, it was going in and out of the U.S. embassy)
ME->NH - Hiking in the Mahoosuc Range along the AT
NH->VT - Lived in Hanover, NH, crossed the border on foot and by bike several times a week
MA->NH - Lived in Nashua, NH and worked close to the MA border, crossed many times
AZ/NM/UT/CO - 4 Corners trip
US->CA - Several times, some near Niagara Falls, once in the Boundary Waters by canoe
I’m sure there are others, I’ll think about it a bit.
We were traveling by car, and immediately after we crossed the border, we pulled off the road, walked back a few steps, took a picture at the state line, and then went back to the car and continued.
First thought is Four Corners where one can walk from CO to UT to AZ to NM in about 8 seconds, or reach into them all at the same time.
For true border crossings though;
US > Mexico, walked across shallow Rio Grande at Presidio,
US > Mexico, shallow Rio Grande at Lajitas
US > Mexico, bridge at Laredo > Nuevo Laredo.
England > Wales, walk across Severn Bridge.
Utah > Idaho, walked across during geology summer field course.
Tennessee > Arkansas, walked across Mississippi River at Memphis.
