What can you tell me about George Wash. Univ?

I know it’s a private school, but how prestigious is it? Is it any better than most state universitites (in terms of its business program)? Is it about the same?

I’ve seen US News’s ratings, how accurate are they? It looks pretty even with some other state universities, but does it make up for it in other ways (internships that are available, big network of alumni, etc.)?

I’m not sure what else I want to know right now, so I’d like to hear what anyone has to say about GW. Any help would be appreciated.

It’s in the most boring DC neighborhood of all, Foggy Bottom.

Has a good med school, a lot of connections with the state department, so would be a good choice if you want to study medicine, international relations or diplomacy.

It’s a private school, so while it might rank with a lot of state schools, it will be MUCH more expensive. I guess whether it’s worth it depends on what you study and where you intend to live. There are a lot of GW grads who find niches in DC.

Yojimboguy, doesn’t sound too promising. I’m interested in business, and GW’s business program’s ratings look mediocre. I’ve heard that there isn’t very much of a “campus” feel to the, um, campus. What’s wrong with the neighborhood? Isn’t it close to the Kennedy Center? There’s a metro stop, right?

Anyone else care to add their thoughts?

Here’s a similar thread from a few weeks back, with some commentary relevant to your questions. Some stuff on Foggy Bottom near the end.

It’s near downtown DC, which is pretty dead socially at night, though it’s an easy Metro hop to other areas, and to various other Washington attractions. The campus is urban – very little greenery.

If you’re looking for something more suburban in DC, there’s American University (very nice campus) and, of course, Georgetown.

Thanks, RealityChuck, I start in a few weeks. My friend had a choice between Maryland and GW for business, and he took Maryland. They put him in their Honors Program (MUCH easier to get into than GW’s and about the same in terms of rep) and their business school is ranked a lot higher. Cheaper too. So I’d go with them if you have your heart set on the DC Area.
