What Can You Tell Me About the K-129 (A Russian Submarine)

I’ve been watching Extreme Machines on TLC and it was talking about an incident in the summer of 1968 in which the Russians lost a submarine, the K-129. The Americans found it a long way from where the Russians were searching and, according to the program, it was missing 2 nuclear warheads. The program suggests it may have gone rogue and that it may have been targetting Hawaii.

I know TLC’s website might have some more information on this, but I’d like to learn more and who better to ask than the Teeming Millions and, of course, Cecil, himself. Yes, I’m tracking down the appropriate goat to sacrifice to petition Cecil.

Some varied links regarding the K-129:

A Washington Post article from 2000

A .pdf file about the Glomar Explorer, which was involved in the secret recovery operation of the K-129.

Regarding Operation Jennifer

There was a book written about the incident called The Jennfier Project. You might be able to find it at a local library.

Also, I’m not sure how reliable that website is, since another section of it claims a NATO submarine rammed the Kursk.
