I need to get a real smart phone, I know I want an Android, and I have a $25 gift card with Amazon. That’s about all I know about what I should get. What do y’all say?
It would be decent if it was 2010, It’s running android 2.3.4 which is very old and clunky. How much are willing to spend?
The Moto G is probably the best value right now at 180 for the 8 gig version.
That looks like a very old-style, clunky phone. A Blackberry wannabe back when Blackberries were A Thing.
Who is your carrier? Or, who do you want your carrier to be. That should be your starting point.
I got this exact Moto G and I’ve been very, very happy with it. Of course, it’s my first smartphone so I have no basis of comparison.
Yeah, first thing is to decide what carrier you want to go with, which depends on who has the best service coverage in your local area and other areas you might regularly need your phone to work. Then look at their choices of contract/non-contract plans that you would be happy with.
Do you currently have a dumb cell phone? What carrier and how much do you pay currently? How many voice minutes a month do you think would be sufficient? How much would you be willing to pay a month for unlimited voice minutes and a decent data plan? Where do you live, Fort Worth?
And maybe I should have led with it, but whatever you do DO NOT GET THAT CRAPPY ASS PHONE you linked to under any circumstances. You can do much, much better, even in that price neighborhood. (The first “feature” listed in that phone’s details is that it’s “Imported” - which is a very bad sign, not to mention all the other crappy specs.)
Also, you don’t, repeat, YOU DON’T really need a phone with a physical keyboard. Trust me. I have an older Android phone with a much better slide out keyboard (it’s actually the same OS version as the one in your link) and I hardly ever use it anymore. All my keyboard does is add weight and bulk, and all the style of keyboard you’re looking at will do is rob you of potential screen space/size. There are many very good Android keyboard apps to choose from, and even the built in generic one is so good, you will quickly learn to not need/want a physical keyboard.
Also, a 3G phone is seriously, piss-poor inadequate for most applications. That is 20-year-old technology! I use voice-to-text on my phone so the outdated and stupid keyboard is besides the point anyhow.
I can get a 4G device, whatever the latest Android version, with 16 megapixel camera, and all sorts of goodies, brand new, starting at $40 with my carrier. That eBay phone is a complete rip-off. Unless you’re in Ulan Bator or some similar location that doesn’t support modern technology.
I just realized he’s on sprint, they have the moto g for $99 with the no contract/prepaid plans.
Another Moto G vote. Best value for money. I have it, I am very happy with it. It’s fast, has a nice screen, everything works as it should and it does everything you could want in a smartphone. Really the only thing that would be better in a more expensive phone is the camera lens, and that only gets better if you up a few hundred in price. If you want to go cheaper there is also the similar Moto E.
Do not get the thing you linked to, it looks terrible.
Yep, I’ve got a moto G and would get another in a heartbeat, The most recent version has 4g and an SD card. Best value phone out there by a country mile.
If you do really really want a phone with a physical keyboard, they are few and far between. A used but excellent Droid 4 off eBay is outdated but wouldn’t be a bad choice for less than $100.
Verizon offers the iPhone 4S, and a couple other smartphones, for free with a 2-year contract.
I am yet unaware of a carrier that will actually pay you to take a phone.
Maybe not, but the next best thing would be a free phone (after special offer/sale + rebate) with NO-contract, which you can choose from the two relatively solid choices at MetroPCS. Or pay a little more ($49) for better, or a little more ($99) for much better and “future-proof” with LTE.
Since T-mobile merged with MetroPCS, pretty much all the phones MetroPCS sells are actually T-mobile phones with national service through T-mobile. As the combined companies integrate further and deploy LTE, which they seem to be doing rapidly, the already impressive coverage and speeds will get even better. And now Sprint looks like it’s going to make a play for the combined company, which should lead to further eventual improvements.
The $0 down, 0% interest, 24 monthly payment, NO-contract deals at T-Mobile are pretty attractive too. They’ll even pay any early termination fees if you switch from another carrier. There’s a lot more phone choices available there, which I’ll be happy to make recommendations from if anyone is interested. (For future-proofing, I suggest trying to at least get an LTE-capable phone to take maximum advantage of all the previously mentioned service improvements.)
