I was watching Maude and Walter is arrested for flashing. Of course he didn’t do it and his alibi is he spent all day in a movie theatre watching a Donald Duck marathon. (He called it a film retrospective)
So the question is what cartoon marathon would you sit through at a movie theatre?
Bugs Bunny? Popeye? Woody Woodpecker, Mickey Mouse? It can be any cartoon even one on TV like the Flintstones or the Jetsons, but you’d have to go to a movie theatre to see it and you’d have to sit through, let’s say, an eight hour marathon.
Is there a cartoon like that you could sit through an eight hour marathon, if so which one?
Though 8 full hours of Archer don’t exist yet, I’ll wait until they finish season two, then happily endure both seasons in one sitting!
…Hmmm… season 1 had 10 episodes; assuming season 2 has 10 as well, and they’re 22 minutes each, that’s only 7 hours and 20 minutes. Can I get 40 minutes of bathroom breaks sprinkled in? If not, can we throw in a couple of Venture Brothers eps to take up the slack?
(Much as I love the WB gang, they’d get mighty repetitive after only a couple hours, I’d think. Not sure if I’d enjoy sitting through 8 hours.)
Beyond the obvious Warner Brothers (A Tex Avery retrospective? Hell yes!), some ideas come to mind.
I watched all of Macross in one sitting once. I’d sure as heck watch all of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan.
I might pay to see a good Mickey revue, you never see the classic Disney stuff anywhere anymore.
A nice in-context retrospective? Newsreels and cartoons? Oh, I could spend all day with that. Fleischer? Sure, why not.
I held a Robotech marathon for a group one time when I was a teenager. 85 episodes at ~22 minutes apiece, Robotech II: The Sentinels, a bootleg copy of Robotech: The Movie, and an English dub of Macross: Do You Remember Love? Overall, it took about two days; it should have taken less, but we took breaks to get pizza and play imported Macross games on the TurboGrafx-16. I’d seriously love to attend a theatrical marathon, which would now be even longer with the addition of the Robotech: Shadow Chronicles film.
(Robotec wasn’t my only marathon; in my 20s, I had impromptu marathons of various anime and animation series-- I was the only one in my circle of friends who had a laserdisc player and had box sets of various series, so whether I wanted to be or not, I ended up being the host for a lot of geek fests.)
I’d be willing to (try to) sit through marathons of most of my favorite American theatrical shorts; Warner Bros., MGM, UA, etc. Not really into anime any more, and not sure I could stand to sit through marathons of Popeye, Walter Lantz, and so on. I’d be more interested in seeing marathons of indie stuff; show all of the Spike & Mike festivals back to back, or all of the entries in the Animation Celebration fests, etc.
Sometime in the late 90s, some station (Cartoon Network?) had a top 100 or whatever cartoon marathon. It went on all day, IIRC. Looney Tunes, Disney, Tom and Jerry, even Bambi Meets Godzilla. Some of it was very politically incorrect and hadn’t seen the light of day in many decades.
I’ve probably sat through eight straight hours of The Simpsons at some point in my life already but if you gave me breaks for sleeping and going to the toilet, and I had no commitments, and you brought me food, I think I could, in theory, watch the entire 20-year run of the show for as many days as it would take.
Now who wants to sponsor me in my quest to test out this theory?
