What causes people to be this cruel to an animal?

You don’t offer any explanation, just a link and a couple of sentences that end with question marks.

Yeah, I’m not clicking on a link to a video of “animal cruelty” without a description, no way, nohow. Almost didn’t open the thread, based on mouseover.
We’re gonna need a little more information.
I only watched the first few seconds of the video, but it looks like they’re drowning a rodent.
The link is to a video of some asshole teenage (ish?) males drowning a young rat on a sticky trap. (Something my DH and I have done in the past…ok, he usually did it :o…drowning them is far quicker and less cruel than just tossing them in the trash to die slowly of thirst/starvation, imo). No, I did NOT watch the whole thing, just about half…enough to get the gist and refuse to watch the rest.
BUT, these guys are shown slowing the process, essentially waterboarding the poor beast to prolong its panic, suffering and eventual death, and laughing/joking about it. :mad:
What makes them do it? I suspect that the 40 oz. bottle of alcoholic beverage in the background had at least something to do with it (at least with giving them an “excuse” to behave like monsters).
And testosterone has been known to act on immature male brains in such a way, esp. when they are in a pack. I’ve heard of/seen a LOT worse than this from young men, incl. soldiers, thankfully most of it second-hand.
Some people are just psycho/sociopaths and take pleasure in the suffering of others, esp. those weaker than themselves. (one of the main “signs” of this condition is early abuse/torture/killing of animals).
In some case, it can be a case of peer pressure or mob mentality (and they often wonder WTH did I DO that and feel terrible guilt afterwards, as they SHOULD, imo).
I think its also possible for someone to have been a victim of sadistic abuse themselves and act it out on others.
None of these are an excuse, just possible “reasons”/factors.
And while I support freedom of speech and the internet, this is as good an example of “pornography” as I have seen lately.

I watched the video and I have no answer. I feel something about the male of the species having to prove themselves by killing animals, also groups of males fighting amongst themselves for the right to mate. Stuff that our intellect should have dialled out years ago but still lives on in drunk teenagers. Shame. Poor rat, they only live among us because of our dirty habits, no need to kill them just relocate.
