What causes the headache that comes with a hangover?

Ok, so I go out tie one one, I wake up with the most horrendous headache you can imagine, then…the vomiting starts. I won’t stop vomitting until I can get rid of the headache. Until this point, I’m dizzy, lethargic, weak, and shakey.

But now, because beer sometimes plays hell on my sinuses I will take a couple of sinus pills (pseudophedrine with acetaminiphine) and even though I may have drank a river, I will wake up with no headache and thus, very little feeling of being “hungover.” I will just feel a little tired and sluggish. No nausea, no dizziness, and no shaking.

Two questions I guess,

Why would the sinus meds help?
and
What causes the throbbing headache in the first place?

Be aware that acetaminiphine and alcohol are not a good combination.

As for the headache, I was told that all the suffering from a hangover id due to dehydration.

YMMV of course.

Yep, like Reeder says, dehydration.

You wanna drink and not wake up with a horrid headache, drink a quart of seltzer water before you go to bed. It won’t totally eliminate a hangover but it will sure ameliorate the greater portion of it.

I know alcohol dehydrates you, but I also heard alcohol displaces the water putting pressure on the brain, and hence the headache. Drinking water while alcohol is in your system (such as, to combat dry mouth) only serves to compound the problem, IIRC. Isn’t this true? - Jinx

A long-ago article in Esquire magazine stated that oxidation of one alcohol molecule uses up four molecules of water. Thus, a hangover is mostly dehydration. You can plan ahead by drinking water every time you go pee. You can slug down a glass of Gatorade before bed or when you wake up. Anti-oxidants such a vitamins C and E are theoretically good for counteracting the ugly byproducts your body makes out of large amounts of alcohol.

Although generations of college students have researched drunkenness, little of it was written down, and formal research on hangovers is hard to find. “Stan, would you mind typing more quietly?”
