There is no cure that I know of for the hangover besides time.
But it CAN be prevented, so listen to your fathers, I heard this from mine.
Contrary to belief, avoidance and moderation is not the answer. If you choose to drink, you can still feel decent the day after. The problem is that alcohol, and all the trips to the bathroom, cause your body to dehydrate. You may be consuming a lot of fluids, but you are losing much more than you take in. This lack of water is the cause of the headaches and sickness the day after. Therefore, in order to remedy this, try drinking as much water as you can (at least a pint) before you fall asleep/pass out. By drinking lots of water before sleep, you are removing the problem before it occus because you are no longer dehydrated. If you have ever run a hard race (and sweat out much of your water in the process) you will get a bad headache from the dehydration, its the same principle.
Folks, the weekend is upon us, take two pints of water and tell me how it goes in the morning!
On topic let me include something:

I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.

I’m rarely in situations where I overindulge in drinking, but when I’ve had a bit much I take two aspirin (not acetomenophen or ibuprophen) and drink a large glass of water. I know that taking aspirin is not recommended when you’ve been drinking, but it helps me. (And the water, as the OP said, is important.)
I drink hard liquor. And when I do, I drink one glass of water for every two drinks.
When I fall asleep, I make sure I have a glass of water and bottle of asprin next to the bed. When I wake up four or five hours after I passed out (I ALWAYS do this. When drunk, I sleep hard, but only for short periods of time) I take two asprin, drink the whole glass of water, and generally go to the bathroom. When I really wake up three hours later, I am right as rain.
Wine makes me sick, I think it’s more acidic then liquor. And beer makes me sleepy. Feh. Give me vodka or give me sobriety.
Water. Definitely water. During the period of drinking will work better, but at least do so before falling asleep/passing out. I also take a multi vitamin and a couple of Tylenol as well; I don’t know whether the latter actually make a difference, but they seem to.
In addition to drinking copius amounts of water before, during and after a alcohol-fest there are a few other things you may wish to try.
You lose a lot of B complex vitamins when you drink. It is important to replace these-- if you don’t, you’ll feel hungover the next day.
There are also some substances that act as liver cleansing agents-- helping to flush out the extra toxins caused by alcohol from the liver. I think marshmallow root is one of these.
SO-- if you can drink lots of water AND take the right combination of vitamins and liver-cleansing agents all at the same time you can almost completely avoid a hangover.
I recommend Source Naturals Hangover Formula. Take 3 before drinking, 3 just after, and 3 the next morning if needed-- along with lots of H2O.
These things have gotten me through many a Las Vegas weekend with nary a head throb.
I’m all about the water and vitamin (I take a b-complex vitamin, which seems to help and makes my urine a lovely shade of nuclear yellow)… but Tylenol is a general no-no when drinking.
