We had a party here last night (this is Little 500 weekend at IU, a big time for partying) and I was pretty out of this world. When I woke up this morning, I had the worst hangover I’ve ever had in my life. I took 3 Bloomingfoods multi-vitamin tablets (3333% of daily Vitamin B-12, among a lot of other things) and drank a few glasses of water and ate a chocolate donut. An hour or two later and not only was the hangover gone, I felt great.
I’ve tried many things in the past to ease a hangover, but this one was by far the most effective.
In the (gratefully distant) past, I found there wasn’t a hangover on the planet that would stand up to 200 mg of IV Demerol. [sub]do not try this at home/work/anywhere as death would also not be an unexpected outcome[/sub]
Not that I would endorse illegal behavior, but the best cure for a hangover is marijuana. It relieves body aches, eliminates naseau, and restores appetite.
In no particular order, any combination of the following: Advil, water, caffeine (in the form of an energy drink is good), Gatorade, PediaLyte, Vitamin Water, Emergen-C, greasy and/or starchy food, a protein-supplement drink like Ensure, and LOTS of sleep…
IntelSoldier - in what form do you take the carbon?
When you’re done drinking for the night, eat something greasy and salty… Really greasy. The fat will help slow the absorption of alcohol while you’re asleep, and the salt will help you retain your water.
The next morning, when you wake up, hit the sports drinks (Gatorade/Powerade, etc.) Take an ibuprofen or ASA if you’ve got a headache (NOT TYLENOL. It may cause liver damage, and if you ever want to drink again, (Though you may not at that moment) never, ever go with Tylenol and alcohol) and then go back to bed for a few hours.
You’ll wake up the second time feeling, hopefully, human. If not you’ll at least feel like a large primate, such as a a gorilla.
Back in my Little 500 days at IU, the most common hangover remedy was Gatorade and a banana, to replenish the fluids and potassium. Or some just cracked open another beer as soon as they woke up (hair of the dog, and all that). Not sure that last one is a great idea, but it always worked.
Water. If I’m drinking alot, I try to nurse a glass of water as I’m drinking. When I get home I drink more water, and then right before I go to bed, I drink as much water as my stomach can comfortably hold. Maybe even take an advil or two with it. Then if I have a headache in the morning, tylenol and/or advil and lots more water.
Of course if you want the ultimate hangover cure. A shot of Imitrex will do the trick better then anything else I’ve ever had. Of course it’s expensive and if you don’t have a presciption for it, it’ll be pretty hard (and illegal) to come by.
Years ago I read/heard that liquor does two major things to cause the hangover: It dehydrates you, and it messes with your blood sugar. Ever since I’ve ameliorated the effects with a big bottle of Gatorade and a king-sized Snickers and it’s always worked. Then I eat like a pig.
Water and ibuprofen, sausage and egg butty washed down with sugary tea, then if I’m still feeling rough later, can of coke and more ibuprofen. I have to have stodge and sugar if I’m hungover. Have to.
I usually drink diet soda, when I drink soda at all. But for a hangover, regular old Coca-Cola with the sugar in it is one of the best things I’ve found. The caffeine seems to help the headache. And the cola syrup is good for nausea–in fact, a pharmacy near here sells little bottles of cola syrup for just that purpose. It’s not at all surprising that Coca-Cola was invented by a druggist. Good medicine, even without the “coke”.
