Now that the UK is leaving the European Union, what can/will be done differently in the UK? Will it be harder for people in the EU to enter the UK for work/residence/tourism? Different regulations/tariffs on goods imported from EU countries?
Very difficult to predict in detail, but I guess Britain’s relationship with the EU will be somewhat similar to that of Switzerland and Norway (both not EU members). It’s not the end of the world.
I don’t think there is any way to know right now. It depends how both parties adjust their laws and regulations to account for the new situation. And it depends on how vindictive everyone’s feeling at the time the details of the changes are decided.
Can we return to this thread once the exit agreement is negotiated between the UK and the EU? Because I don’t think it can be answered until then.
Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union is the important part here, so I’ll just drop that link in the thread.
We’ll have to wait and see, there’s certainly some turbulence ahead, before the dust will settle, since nobody really knows what size the dust cloud will be.
However, I don’t think, it will change travel thru or into the UK from the EU or US for tourists. Work permits for none UK citizens are another story, since this was one of the main reasons they wanted out. It’s also unclear for all those UK citizens outside of the UK in the EU what their status is.
The Scottish already making some dust about wanting to be members of the EU - so maybe another referendum about splitting from the UK to enter the EU will happen.
Trade agreements will change, like Toyota who manufactures in the UK for the EU (they export something like 90% into the EU from the UK) or Nissan who produce in the UK as well for the EU. Car (and other good manufactured in the UK) prices may got up for brands from the UK, if there’s a import/export levy put on or vise versa for imported goods to the UK.
They don’t leave the EU for another two years. The world will adapt by then.
Since this requires speculation, it’s not appropriate for GQ. However, there are already several active threads in GD, IMHO, and the Pit, so rather than move it I’m going to close it and direct your attention to the other forums.
