I really really really like Christmas music which is odd since I am not a Christian:smack:
I have been collecting these for years. Some I no longer listen to as my tastes have changed.
** favorites
Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas
Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas
Wynton Marsalis - Crescent City Christmas Card
Various Artists - Phil Spector: A Christmas Gift to You
Are we the only ones who own Bob Rivers’ Twisted Christmas?
Also,
Twisted Sister’s Twisted Christmas In the Christmas Mood by The Glenn Miller Orchestra
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Several volumes of Pottery Barn Christmas
One of my very favorites: “To Drive the Cold Winter Away,” a collection of renaissance and Elizabethan Christmas and seasonal music. Lovely stuff! Their version of “Good King Wenceslas” is absolutely beautiful.
Twisted Sister’s and two MPs (4 songs total) from the 60s. One of these is jotas by two local guys (traditional folk songs but unrelated to anything “folk singers” would sing), the other one is by a priest from I-think-Peru.
I really don’t like Christmas music and avoid it like the plague.
I do like Jonah Lewie “Stop The Cavalry”, which wasn’t supposed to be a Christmas song but became one due to one line in it.
However, I recently bought “Oh Holy Night” by Jackie Evancho, as anything she sings is just great.
Bought mainly for Panis Angelicus and Pie Jesu though.
I have a few, but our record collection is the opposite of organized, and I’m too lazy to inventory them. But out of memory, I know we have:
A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi Trio Jackson 5 Christmas Album - Jackson 5 (Wow, searching that record made me realize it’s worth something. Gotta take better care of that one.)
I’ve got a bunch of inherited compilations with artists like Perry Como and Nat King Cole (one is from Firestone Tires) and I think there’s a Brenda Lee record in there, but those above are the two that I actually listen to enough to be able to name.
Too many to list. Hats off to CT_Damsel for typing all that.
A few favorites are
Don Sickler - An Uptown Christmas
Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem - A Clancy Brothers Christmas
The Star Wars Christmas Album (really only What Do You Get A Wookie for Christmas)
The Roches - We Three Kings
Leon Redbone - Christmas Island
A Windham Hill compilation called - A Winter’s Night
The Chieftains - Bells of Dublin
Luther Vandross - This is Christmas
I choose to play mostly instrumental music in my store and have loads of $5 CDs of Various Artists with titles like “Christmas Brass” and “Christmas Strings”
LP’s include Joan Baez’s Noel, with musical arrangements by “PDQ Bach”–pure, traditional beauty that probably surprised some folks back then. And John Fahey’s first Christmas album. Plus Emmylou Harris–Light of the Stable. (I sometimes buy MP3’s of LP’s I love–hoping some of the money gets back to the creators.)
It’s Christmas, Man by Brave Combo.
Christmas the Cowboy Way by Riders in the Sky.
A Christmas Cornucopia by Annie Lenox.
Quality Street, A Seasonal Selection for the Entire Family by Nick Lowe. (new!)
The Bells of Dublin by the Chieftains.
The Big Christmas Box–one of those cheapo compilations; haven’t heard the whole thing…
The Messiah–I think a version is included in the Big Box, but my favorite is the 1976 version by Sir Neville Mariner & the orchestra & chorus of St Martin In The Fields. Almost “period”–definitely not Overblown Victorian.
Need to check further–I think I’ve got Phil Spector’s compilation, etc…
Maybe not an album, but a quick search shows Mick Jagger recorded Lonely Without You (This Christmas) with Joss Stone, and Axl recorded White Christmas.
My favorite is one called An American Christmas, by the Boston Camerata. Basically, the conductor of the orchestra thought that the rich American musical tradition of the past couple of centuries had been getting short shrift, and decided to showcase it with a Christmas album. Half the songs, I’d never heard of before, but they’re almost all beautiful, and very well-sung.
Also, let’s see… The Best of Christmas, by Haven, which I’m really not wild about-- The song selection is good, but they’d be much better performed by someone with a modicum of talent.
A various-artists album called A Christmas Night, that’s pretty good. Christmas with Julie Andrews, which is too short, but anything sung by Julie Andrews sounds good. Light of the Stable by Emmylou Harris, though I prefer my bluegrass instrumental rather than vocal.
Another various-artists called Orchestral Christmas, also pretty good. The Russian State Chorus Celebrates Christmas, which has good quality singing, but their accents result in some really weird pronunciations. Sing We Christmas, by Chanticleer, which seems to include every style of singing known to Man.
Martina McBride’s White Christmas, another one I’m not too wild over (McBride really isn’t my style).
And Winter Solstice, by John McCutcheon, which is rather growing on me lately (just finished listening to it).
