Well, we all know what made Milwaukee famous…
Sydney
I don’t think anyone has mentioned Harper’s Ferry yet.
(You know, John Brown’s attempted slave revolt).
What relationship does Elvis have to Tupelo? The only thing I think of when I hear that city’s name is “Tupelo Honey” by Van Morrison.
Another city known only for one thing is Hershey, Pennsylvania. Of course, the town was built for the workers of the chocolate factory, so I guess it makes sense.
How about New Orleans? Mardi Gras.
Elvis was born in Tupelo. You can even go visit the house where he was born (whether it’s the actual house or a rebuilt version, I don’t know).
It’s the actual house, but fixed up considerably, of course. I’ve been there; it’s pretty cool. I didn’t actually go in (there didn’t seem to be much point, the house being extremely tiny), but I did go drop $40 in the gift shop.
As long as we’re at it…

I am going to disagree with you here Ringo. While it would be cool if it were always associated with the reason it got its name, an entire generation (or two or three) now doesn’t even remember the television show that shared its name, much less the radio show from which it took its name nor the reason why. In fact, the last few years the town has been trying to change its name from that moniker because its roots have become so obscure and they are tired of explaining the whole thing. I for one would be sad if they do change it, however.
May I in my turn advance the name:
Troy - no, not New York, the one Helen, Paris, Agamemnon, Achilles and Odysseus horsed around with.
Mei Lai
What is the one thing/event that Sydney is known for ?
For more Australian ones :
Milperra (bikie massacre)
Granville (train derailment/ large loss of life)
Which?
Alabama: rockets
Texas: executions
His name is Randy and he has bright red hair. He works for a fish processing company. I haven’t seen him since his mother/my aunt passed away a couple years ago. I was in Bellingham this past October and stopped to see him but he had gone hunting for the weekend.
Williamsport, Pennsylvania
Several of the cities that have been Winter Olympics hosts - Lake Placid, Lillehammer, Nagano, …
I associate it with medieval drama, but I speak as an obsessive literature student…
And while we’re talking about English cities with medieval associations, how about Canterbury?
Surprised no one has mentioned Dayton, OH, the Birthplace of Flight…
Dual purpose? Actually, I was thinking of just up the road from me.
In the immortal words of Alfred E.:
What? My Lai?
(My history/geography may be wrong)
Ypres, where the first gas attack of WWI occured.
Manchester, where the Industrial Revolution began.
Probably because outside of Ohio most people think of ** Kitty Hawk NC **
Dayton is better known (imho) as home of Wright-Patterson AFB.
(also a flood, and NCR)
