What common food items have you never had?

I take it you’re not an adventurous eater. Do you not enjoy trying any new foods, or just certain categories? When was the last time you tried something new and enjoyed it? Have you really managed to never consume a single grain of rice? That seems almost impossible! Do you enjoy eating and is food a big part of your life, or is it more of a chore/neutral activity than an enjoyable activity?

I’m genuinely curious, so hopefully this comes out in a spirit of curiosity and learning and not mocking.

Last thing I added to my stable of foods was probably potato skins, which by the way is the only reason cheese was not on my list as never been eaten. I’m content with what I eat. I’ve got steak, ribs, burgers, chicken, pork, fruits, vegetables, fries, onion rings, cake, ice cream, the list does go on. As for rice, unless its in some food as a minor ingredient that I’m unaware of, never ate it.

My god, you people. Live a little!

Unless it involves beets. Then lock yourself in your house with no computer and no phone and barricade the “Come onnnn, tryyyyy it…” hordes out.

I hope you don’t feel picked on, but I’m burning with curiosity. The thought of never eating cheese, or rice… Was it because you were a picky eater as a kid, or did your parents never serve many things? Medical issues, perhaps? Some of this stuff would be really hard to avoid.

Anyway, you definitely won the thread!

I grew up in the midwest on a farm and the list of things Vicsage eats pretty much covers what was served in my house. However, when I went to college, my roommate was from a Czech background and our friends were Italian and Polish, respectively. They all took me to their homes and fed me amazing things and I never looked back. I remember visiting my parents once and my dad told me with pride that he had learned to eat “paster” at the local pizza joint (it was baked mostaccioli). That was his biggest adventure into new food.

I kind of wish the KFC Double Down had come out before I became a vegetarian because I would have totally had one.

I’ve never had a fish taco, it seems they weren’t a thing around here until recently.

I’ve never tried marshmallow fluff or a “fluffernutter” - didn’t even know that was a thing until “Oz” when Cyril wanted them for his last meal.

I still haven’t had Nutella, a Big Mac, or bratwurst (despite going to college in Wisconsin).

Common where I now live but never on my dinner plate are grouper and sea turtle.

Other than tongue, I have never had organ meats alone. Granted I have had haggis.

I seriously can’t think of something I have not tried when I had the chance. There are several things that I have had once or twice and can live without eating again, such as a Big Mac or olives.

I’ve never had lamb or mutton. My mom didn’t like it, so I never learned to cook it, and if I eat out the menus always have so many things I really like on them I have trouble making up my mind between those. I’ve eaten almost everything else mentioned in this thread except bugs, lutefisk, and head cheese, and other things I don’t really regard as “common”.

Decidedly not.

I’ve never had corned beef.

To counter-balance a number of posters above, I eat raw oysters about once week.

Lobster tastes alot like crab but it is more subtle. It is kind of like crab mixed with shrimp. The texture is totally different. Crab is very tender and flaky and lobster is much more substantial.
If you like steamed shrimp I would give it a try, otherwise very little chance you would like it.
Is anyone else curious about what the common foods they have not eaten taste like?

I have never had chicken and dumplings. My mother didn’t like it, so she never made it. Every time I’ve seen it, all I see is chicken, gravy, and soggy biscuits. I’ve never been tempted to try it.

Everything else, I’ve tried when offered. Organ meats, lamb, beets, and turnips are things that I’ve had and decided we won’t be meeting up again.

Many types of seafood have to be really fresh to be any good. Crab is like that - the flavor is great when fresh, but as it ages the flavor and aroma deteriorate. There’s a world of difference between crab straight from the ocean and crab from the supermarket butcher counter. Unfortunately, most people never get to taste the really fresh stuff.

Neither Mom nor Grandma ever cooked lamb. Nor mutton. I think someone in The Older Generation had been traumatized by Institutional Mutton. Lamb is quite tasty but mutton is hard to find here.

Lutefisk is not common in Texas; nor are culinary bugs. I’ve had head cheese; not bad, but I didn’t love it. Otherwise, I’ve eaten just about everything mentioned so far. Hated liver as a kid but can now enjoy it–if someone else cooks. As a kid & young adult, I ate my share of fast foods; no longer.

As kids, we had La Choy Chinese & Chef Boyardee spaghetti (the boxed kind, not the canned stuff). Learned where to buy better Chinese food & how to make better spaghetti–but it was a break from meat & potatoes. Since this is the Gulf Coast, the drive-in offered shrimp baskets–yum. And of course we had rice!

I’m Mexican and grew up and live in California. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of fish tacos…looking at a few images it just looks like battered fish, as in fish and chips or fish sticks? Closest I’ve ever come to that was when I was drunk and made a chicken nugget taco.

Fish tacos are pretty common in California – at least in So Cal where I lived. Sometimes fish is battered and sometimes fried, with cabbage and a green sauce usually. Yum.

Fish tacos originated in Baja California, and in the U.S. first became popular in San Diego. There are chain restaurants (such as Rubio’s) that offer them.

Two more things I never had, in addition to Spam and Twinkies.

When I was a kid, we always had a huge garden of veggies and picked fruit and berries in the wild. And my mother bought most of her meat and dairy from local farmers or butchers. And we also canned lots of fruit and veggies. So a lot of what we ate was home-grown or home-made. We really weren’t exposed to a lot of junk food or pre-digested crap. Except for a ton of candy, post-Halloween.

This thread is getting pretty silly. I grew up in the Midwest as well, and have relatives that are 20+ years older than Vicsage.

Maybe not Japanese food, but they’ve certainly had cheese and/or rice.

Nutella, sushi,
and considering that I grew up on the bay, I’ve never had oysters, clams, or scallops.
