What cool gifts did you get (or give) this year?

I got close to $300, The Departed DVD with a $30 Chipotle gift card hidden inside (boy, does my brother know me), two mystery novels from a new series that my mom thought I might like, and a pair of slippers. And possibly a smartphone, but we’ll see about that tomorrow.

Gave books to my brother, a Kindle to my mom, and an iPod nano to my dad.

Got LEGO Mindstorms 2.0 for Christmas. I’d dropped plenty of hints.

A lot of friends have told me its the best intro into Robotics and its a lot of fun. I’m a bit old for Lego sets, but I do want to keep my skill sets current. Robotics is the future. I’m hoping it’ll be my newest hobby for awhile.

I got a new pocketwatch and a nice pair of suspenders (navy with a red stripe). I gave The Wife a couple of scarves and a bracelet.
The Girls got practical stuff they will need in their dorms (shampoo, mouthwash, popcorn, razors, etc), older got a new pair of muck boots and the younger a new MP3 player. And chocolate.
The dog likes her new squeaky squirrel.
Quiet holidays at Casa Fidelius.

I got a Kindle Fire, a new Columbia coat AND jacket, and a food processor.

I made my family fleece blankets.

Gave - I made my boyfriend’s mom a set of ornaments. Each one has the picture of one of her 7 grandchildren, their name, and the year. Another ornament is a chain of pictures of my 3 dogs (since we have no kids to add). She loved it and kept looking at them and showing them to everyone else.
This year was a totally awesome year for us so this is long…

Got - My boyfriend’s mom made everyone a calendar. They were made at Walgreens and are very professional. They’re all personalized so for ours, January has a picture of me (my birthday is in Jan) with my boyfriend and one of our dogs. July has a picture of our rat terrier and August has a picture of our dingoes. It’s totally awesome and we can’t stop looking through it.

My boyfriend’s mom also gave us a picture of a tree (black and white) in a big frame with a quote from Mother Teresa under it. It’s beautiful and the picture is totally my kind of art. It’s hanging over my desk where I can see it all the time.

My boyfriend’s parents also gave us a pneumatic caulking gun and that’s probably the coolest gift we got all year (we live in a log cabin and our entire house needs to be rechinked).

My mom gave us thishttp://www.amazon.com/Armageddon-Catalogue-Disasters-Culminate-World/dp/0062005936 and this.
Seriously, everyone got us wicked awesome gifts this year.

SO got a tiny bottle of Fendi perfume that cost twice as much as the ten-times larger bottle she bought six years ago (and the one before that). She says the 0.15 ounce bottle is nice because she can carry it in her purse, and that it might last her two years. She’s mentioned several times over the past year that she wanted to buy a Sonic Care toothbrush when she has the money. So I got her one of the nicer models. I also gave her a fairly romantic Christmas card. This one didn’t make her cry, though.

I got a Teflon pizza pan, a Lodge cast-iron cornbread mould that makes ear-of-corn-shaped pieces of cornbread, and a tin of Whitman’s chocolates. I’ve always wanted the cast-iron piece, but it’s not something I’d buy for myself – and I’ve had plenty of opportunities. So it’s neat to get one.

I got a Keurig and lots of K cups. Yay!!!

I got these Solomon boots for my mom (boots), a box of milk bones for Hanna, also a durable ball that floats and glows in the dark.

Give my Mom a double CD (The Columbia Recordings) of Doris Day. She’s always loved her music and didn’t have any.

The last two seasons of Doctor Who (which I was expecting) and the complete Zorro series back from the 90s. Complete and utter surprise, total nostalgia trip. Mom knows me well.

This for the wife, an iPad 2 for the kid and an AR-15 .223 with a VarX3 4.5x14x50 for moi. A nice day.

I received some excellent presents from people who know my tastes well:

A friend got me a Region 1 DVD of the movie Quadrophenia, which has been out-of-print for years.

My brother sent me CDs of Robyn Hitchcock’s Sergeant Pepper Live at 3 Kings Pub and also FM’s legendary one-off, recorded direct-to-disc album, Head Room.

Gave the kid the new Nintento DS 3D. I’ve been listening to Pokemon music ALL day.

Guess she liked it. :stuck_out_tongue:

A large cardboard Justin Beiber and a Play-Doh Dr. Drill and Fill toyset, the perfect revenge presents to the children of my dentist-fearing heavy metal musician friend.

Thanks for the update, ZPG! I’ve been wondering what you got.

Due to our circumstances this year, we agreed to just one gift each, under $15. So my husband got me a used copy of A Night In The Lonesome October (which I’d learned of in here) for next Halloween (my favorite holiday!) and I got him a cover to go over the back seat in his truck to contain the dog hair when we take them for a ride.

I’d only seen those things at pet stores for like $30 bucks at the least expensive, but last night I found a cheap one under our price limit at a drug store. So yay for last minute shopping!!

All in all, a very blessed Christmas for the 'fools.

ETA: Oh, and the animals also got .99 toys each. Thankfully, we only have three. Hee.

My sister gave me a Sylvania SMP2200 mp3 player – I lost my trusty Zen Micro a few months ago and it’s been killing me. My mom gave me a carton of smokes – I called it “the gift of death,” but since I’ve been smoking more since starting to take some classes, they’re handy and will last a long time. (Hey, I meet a lot of nice girls out in the smoking area, no lie! Keeps me young and/or a pervy Wooderson type.)

I made croissants as gifts this year – my first time making them, and they turned out pretty damned good (I used the Cook’s Illustrated recipe from last issue) if I do say so myself. Unfortunately, I now am officially out of butter, so I have to go shopping again.

I got a wonderful new camera case - backpack style, very well padded, with space for the Nikon with the telephoto lens attached and the regular lens stashed. Velcro pockets for memory cards, a pocket for my hockey press pass, and room for other stuff so I don’t have to carry a purse. It’s perfect!

We gave our 5 year old a DSi. He’s always begging to use his cousins’ and dying to play games on Daddy’s phone, so we asked the grandparents to chip in and they were happy to do so. We also got him the Phineas and Ferb game, but so far he’s just enjoying playing with the camera and sound recording features.

The 3 year old is OBSESSED with Thomas the Tank Engine. I can’t really count right now (1/2 a bottle of wine!), but I think they got at least a dozen new trains.

Plus, the boys get to spend the night at Nana’s house! They were so excited to stay over that they kept asking when we were leaving, 'cause apparently it’s not any fun if we’re there as well.

I got my oldest son one of those too. The 3-D is really neat! I splurged and got him a Harry Potter Lego game to go with it. It figures that he liked the Harry Potter light-up wand (he kept yelling “Illuminated tip! Illuminated tip!” when he saw what it was, cracking everyone up) and glasses better than his game system…which was okay with me because I got to fool around with it…what a neat little system the 3DS is!
