What cornmeal recipes would you buy?

Hushpuppies are very simple to make (but not necessarily easy). You really need a deep fryer but you can improvise with an electric skillet if you have to. The recipe itself is about as easy as it gets but you have to know how to deep fry so that you end up with hushpuppies that are crisp on the outside but not burned.

Here is the most basic recipe that I know of. You can add extra ingredients like chopped jalapenos and spices if you want. They are truly excellent if you fry them the right way and eat them while they are hot.

Here’s the thing about hush puppies, regardless of the recipe. To be truly outstanding, they MUST be fried in the same oil the fish is frying in!

I’m just a California-dwelling Australian. Ground corn is ground corn to me.

My favorite cornmeal thing (aside from hush puppies which I leave to the professionals) is creamed corn casserole. But all the ingredients aside from the corn meal are “wet” so I’m not sure how well you could package it up for selling.

Your best cornbread recipe is a must, though. This authentic BBQ place opened up down the street and not only are their hush puppies to die for, so is their cornbread. Miles away from whatever my (midwestern, Slovak) mom has been making all these years.
