Grits are made from corn, and jmpride’s description of their appearance is right on. But you don’t eat them like breakfast cereal; the best way to eat them is to season with pepper, then add a dab of butter.
From this northerner’s perspective, they aren’t bad, if done right.
There are, of course, many things that are better than all-you-can-eat breakfasts, unless we’re referring to breakfast in bed. But they’re definitely one of the good things in life, and I only wish I still routinely burned enough calories that I could eat that way more often.
Grits are a specialty of the southeastern part of the U.S… Actually, when talking about grits it should be Dixie. There are several ways to fix them, but for me I like them with fried eggs (easy over).
In Hawaii, sticky white rice is common with breakfast. I think McDonalds still serves it. I wish Home Town Buffet or Bob’s had it here in Southern CA.
What would happen if I brought my rice cooker in one morning?
What could be better than an all you can eat breakfast buffet? An all you can eat breakfast buffet that was open ALL DAY! Now, don’t get me wrong, I love IHOP, but this “breakfast any time of day” girl likes a little variety in her meals, and would be extremely pleased if more places would serve breakfast all day long. Mmmmm…going to Home Town Buffet for breakfast food at dinner time sounds like heaven to me!
As for grits, I love 'em, and I’m not from the southeast. While they are a tasty addition to breakfast, I must say that the absolute best way that I’ve had them prepared is in “shrimp and grits”, a dish that I have only found in the southeastern part of the country.
Damn it, I just ate, and now I’m all hungry again!
Right after reading this I am really really hungry.
I love pancakes with blackcurrent jam mmmmmmmm scrambled eggs with lots of pepper & fresh fruit salad with kiwis, bananas, grapes and strawberries with yoghurt yum yum yum yum
Only 4 hours till I finish my shift and can go for pancakes
they also require salt, to taste. Cheese is an excellent additive as is butter and/or redeye gravy (country ham grease with a little coffee sirred in). Enjoy!
I personally am highly enamored of the grits served by this nations’ Waffle House chain of restaurants.
Call me a Yankee with zero taste, but you give me a nice cheese omlette ( whipped up in a genuine Hamilton Beach Wall-mounted blender, no less ), a double Scattered, Smothered and Covered and a bowl of their Grits and I am just in pig heaven.
Leave it to RTFirefly to be the first (and I can’t believe it took that long) to make sexual innuendo. I was thinking “yeah, there’s one thing better than breakfast all the time…”.
My big problem with going out to breakfast at a non-buffet sytle restaurant is that I want a little bit of everything. I want pancakes or waffles but I also want eggs. I want bisquits in gravy, of course - but don’t forget some bacon. Oh, you have fresh fruit, too? I end up with 10 plates and a few bites out of each one. The buffet is definitely the way for me to go. I love breakfast foods. They are fantastic.
I think the only possible improvement on a breakfast buffet would be booths that fold out into comfy little beds. That way you could eat yourself silly, take a nice nap, and then eat again. I’d be headed there every Saturday morning, probably wearing pj’s with feet and a back door flap.
A really wonderful way to serve grits too is to pack them into a loaf pan and refrigerate until they set up then slice and fry in bacon grease until brown and crispy on the outside.
