… without all the swearing etc?
On the weekend I was in the mood for listening to and/or singing along with the tuneful, cheesy and amusing songs on the BLU album, like “Up There”, “Eyes of a Child” and “I Can Change” etc but with my children around it wasn’t an option.
Six year olds pick up catchy songs fast and having mine start bursting out with “You shouldn’t say fuck, you should never say fuck, fuck no!” might be viewed in many quarters as a tad inappropriate.
I’ve never been much into cheesy musical style music. I know that Parker and Stone were (with BLU) parodying various musicals.
Anyone have any suggestions for albums of similar songs, preferably but not necessarily funny, in a similar style?
If they were style-parodying anyone, it was Disney. You can get collections of their songs from all sorts of sources, and you’d be surprised how catchy and fun they are without being cloyingly treacly sweet hardly at all.
Show tunes! Pick a musical…
I guess what I’m saying is that I’m clueless about musicals. Can anyone pick a musical for me?
Not really a musical per se, but the songs from “A Mighty Wind” might work for you.
Gilbert and Sullivan. Start with Pirates of Penzance.
You might try “The Simpsons Sing the Blues.” Some good catchy stuff there. Irreverent but no cussing (well, a “damn” or two, but no hard stuff).
Carousel, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Pal Joey, Camelot, 1776, Cinderella, The King and I, Peter Pan, South Pacific, Porgy and Bess, The Music Man, Man of La Mancha, Cats, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera.
…just for starters…
