I’m not expecting a solution (it’s under warranty, Sony will take care of it - eventually), just curious.
Bought it a week ago from a mail-order company, Sony Vaio VGN-NR21 J/S. Worked like a dream for the first week. I did notice warmth coming from the vent sometimes, and the same vent got quite hot once and shut down but it was after my daughter had been using it on her lap, leaving no room for air circulation. When it cooled it came on again without a problem, although the vent still got a little warm even when the laptop was positioned correctly.
Then, 2 or so hours ago, the screen went black, the computer died and nary a peep has been heard from it since. When I press the power switch the green light comes on but then goes off again when I take my finger away. The computer does nothing, no response from within at all. This is when it’s plugged in to the mains. Same deal trying to use battery (which I know is fully charged) - orange light comes on, goes off again. (The orange light flashes constantly when I’m plugged in).
Just out of interest, what would be the most likely fault here? Something burned out? (Although the vent wasn’t that hot when it happened).
Try taking the battery out and plugging the laptop into the mains.
But electronics do tend to suffer ‘infant mortality’, so don’t hesitate to ask for a replacement.
The exact same thing happened to me once. My guess is that you’ll have to change the internal battery - that is, not the big chunky thing you charge regurarly, but a smaller one, deeply imbedded among the curcuits.
It functions much like an ignition, the repair guy told me. If it’s dead, no electricity in the world could get your computer running.
Quartz mentions replacement–does Sony have a return policy? My sister recently had a brand new laptop die, and rather than deal with five years of fixes that might not take (her last computer was the Laptop from Hell), she made them take it back under the 21 day return policy.
Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!
I simply removed the rechargeable battery and it switched on just fine, everything hunky dory. Now I’m loth to put the battery back in!
How could this happen? Was it that the battery wasn’t connecting properly, how would that affect the mains operation?
And a thousand thanks, Quartz!
OK, took the bull by the horns, unplugged from the mains, put battery back in, plugged back in, turned on, everything fine.
Still can’t understand what went on here though. I did notice a switch on the bottom I hadn’t seen before which locks the battery into place. I’ve set that now. Could it simply be that the battery was unseated a little and the Vaio turned off and wouldn’t come back out to play until I’d fixed it?
Could be…
It was almost turning off but got stuck.
So until you pulled the battery out it wasn’t really off so you couldn’t turn it on. Maybe.
