Looked for “A list celebrities” in search and got just a white page, so, if anyone has a link to this topic, please post it.
Otherwise - I’m curious if there’s any particular method they (whoever the fuck “they” are) use for determining who’s an A (or B or C or D)-list celebrity.
Are there actually D-list celebrities? Niel Hamburger?
Would Chris Cooper (who rules insanely) be a B or C list’er? Not that he’d ultimately give a flying turtle’s fuck, I’d guess.
Or back in the day, say - Sterling Hayden - probably a B-lister, back then? He could be outsider-y.
Sometimes I morbidly fantasize there’s a Gold Base-style compound where they take calipers to peoples’ heads, among other metrics and vetting procedures, for determining who’s the big cheese, then half-cheese, then quarter-cheese…then eighth cheese?
The media’s certainly a factor, with publications like “Variety” and I can’t remember the name of that quite specialized publication that’s read usually by Hollywood folk only.
Is there an A,B,C,D board somewhere? With stats (no - analytics:p) on which sector in the entertainment industry is gaining or losing on a “rival” sector (in terms of losing or gaining A list’ers)?
Someone’s gotta declare who belongs where, or - is it just some rag-tag, multi-interpretational, random, my-list-is-better-than-your-list, subjective flub-jubbery?
(I couldn’t think of the right finishing word so I had to invent one)
oh oh - hope the illuminati isn’t after me now.
One objective measure used by the television and film industries is the Q Score, which combines how many people know who you are with how popular you are. Q Scores are calculated and owned by a marketing company that sells them, so they are not openly available, but you will occasionally see them referenced, particularly in regard to who has the highest scores.
I personally would classify anyone known only for a single season of a reality show as D-List celebrity. Someone who watched the show might know who they are, but probably wouldn’t remember or like them very much.
I don’t have an answer for the op, but x1000 Internet points for the Niel hamburger reference! Tho he would probably be F list.
…that’s my life!
I don’t think there’s anything defined as such, but I’ve always understood it to vaguely be as follows:
A-list: Musicians, actors and athletes who are widely recognized as being at the top of their game in a lasting sense, usually due to repeated success. George Clooney, Michael Jordan and Bono would fall into this category.
B-list: Musicians, actors and athletes who are widely recognized as successful, but not world-beatingly so. Most film supporting actors and widely regarded TV actors fall into this category.
C-list: Lesser musicians, actors and athletes who are successful, but not widely so. TV actors famous for a single sitcom might fall here. This is where bassists and drummers from bands with B-list singers are, or supporting characters on B-list TV shows go.
D-list: People who are (in)famous for something surrounding another celebrity. Someone like Kato Kaelin falls into this category. Also, B or C list celebrities who faded from the public eye and who are now (in)famous again for something tawdry or obnoxious. Dustin Diamond would be a good example of this type.
The Vatican issues an updated list every morning via fax to all the major news agencies.
Chris Cooper is a very good example of a “Hey, it’s that guy from that one movie!” Lots of people will recognize him, but fail to recall his name. “Character actor” is a category with a lot of overlap, but not 100% IMHO (Harry! Dean! Stanton!). I don’t know if Cooper really fits into the A-D list - I’ll bet more people know Andy Dick’s name, but that doesn’t mean that Dick ranks higher…
Maybe “That Guys” are graded with a “Satisfactory” or “Incomplete”?
ETA: similar lists on IMDB, Cracked, etc. Not sure I agree with the IMDB - some of those are guys who were known for 1-2 specific things 20 years ago.
considering his appearance may never happen again here, I figured hey why not.
thanks, thelurkinghorror, for the links. Yeah - a number of them I was totally scratching my head at.
wish I hadn’t seen Richard Kind in there.
A-list would probably be if even people who never watch TV, listen to the radio or go to the movies know who they are. People like George Clooney or Dolly Parton or Ben Affleck.
