What did McCains remarks mean re DADT-elites-sacrifice...

I don’t think he is saying or suggesting that more U.S. service-people will die as a result…he is simply continuing his bullshit rambling about some “liberal elite” who, in his fantasy world, have never served, known anyone who has, and yet, in his view, have pushed through this repeal based on nothing more than their PC, pro-gay agenda. Meanwhile, the “REAL AMERICANS” with family in the military who all live in rural communities, apparently, will go on with the sacrifices they, and only they, have always made.

This is a common meme of the far right; the big city, intellectual, liberal radicals vs. the “REAL AMERICANS” who live in rural areas and small towns and either don’t go to college or attend religious/conservative campuses (“common sense” vs “intellectualism”). And it’s complete and utter bullshit. I’m about as liberal as they come and:

My maternal family has had one or more members in every war since the Indian Wars…currently, 2 of my cousins are lifelong military.

My father was a first generation American. And a Marine.

My kids’ father’s side of the family has had members in the military and in combat probably almost as long as mine, including 2 cousins who’ve made it their career.

I’d guess that many if not most “liberals” have known or do know someone who has served or even served themselves. The right-wing doesn’t have a monopoly on military service, as he seems to think.

There’s no place for this sort of divisive rhetoric that pits Americans against one another, imo.

Yup.

The liberal elite who supported repeal, by the way, and apologies if this has been mentioned before, include such unmilitary folks as Patrick Murphy, PA representative who (I think) spearheaded this particular bill, who served in the army from '96 to '04, including in both Bosnia and Iraq, has taught at West Point, and was a paratrooper by training; and Joe Sestak, another PA rep, who is the highest ranking former military officer ever elected to Congress. Not to mention senators such as Jack Reed, Arlen Specter, Jim Webb, and Tom Carper, all of whom served in the military.

…At least, that’s what I recall, and that’s what my copy of Almanac of American Politics says. But I guess it must be wrong, huh? :dubious:

The military types who support repeal of DADT included McCain a couple years ago. What does Rupert have over him to not only change his position to Fox’s but to continue the push while contradicting himself and his position, over and over?. He said he would support DADT is the military study said it would workout. Then he denied the study and continued the push. He has destroyed his dwindling credibility.

I don’t think this is true. The media reports it again and again, and then they show a clip of McCain saying, “When the military leadership comes to us and says it’s time to repeal it, we should give it serious thought.” You know – weasel words. I have yet to see him quoted unambiguously saying that DADT should be repealed when the military wanted it so. He implied it, certainly. That’s what politicians do – say things in a way that everybody hears what they want to hear.

Plus General Wesley Clark, and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga was in the artillery. And Jack Murtha and John Spratt, of course.
