Video here. At around 1:05 in the video several police waiting for the car each throw some sort of *thing * at the car to try and get it to stop. What is it, and why in the world did they expect anything they could lift and throw would have enough force to stop a speeding car?
It was a spike strip. They couldn’t throw it out normally because innocents would have hit it as well (note that there was a lot of traffic in that area). I guess the police officer thought chucking it at the car was better than nothing, it didn’t cost him anything to do it.
Hmm…someone needs to tell them that throwing the “stop sticks” at the car instead of in front of the car is unlikely to have much effect.
That website has a demonstration video. Ideally, you’re supposed to throw it out, then pull it straight across with an attached cord. Then, once the car you want to stop has run over it, you yank it off the road. I think the cop in the news video had to rush it and made a lousy toss.
