I was lurking for a while before the Dope became free and I must say I was influenced into making a few purchases after reading some of the threads.
I hadn’t heard of the Diva Cup until coming to the board (they don’t sell anything even remotely resembling it in Australia, just pads and tampons) and after reading about it I immediately went online and ordered one for myself. It’s fabulous! Best thing next for pain killers at that time of the month.
I also just received ‘The Man Who Folded Himself’ from Amazon and it’s a great (rather weird) book which was mentioned in a post about time travel and if you would choose to have sex with yourself (finding this place was like coming home!).
So I am curious, have you ever gone out and bought something/done something as a direct result of the SDMB? If so what was it, what was the thread that inspired it about and how did it work out for you?
Damn. Stupid connectivity loss (at my end) just ate my post.
Several excellent Dopers, blessings on their heads, steered me to AVG anti-virus. Somebody else was being driven to wall-eyed fits by Norton anti-virus and multiple people linked to the AVG download. Love it, love it, love it. Some helpful Doper mensch even passed along a removal tool that dug out all the nasty, lingering Norton tentacles .
There have been several great threads on favorite kitchen tools, best tips, etc. One inspired me to spring for a silpat baking mat. Very spiffy! And of course WhyNot’s inspired laundry tip: tuck folded clean sheets into one of the pillow cases. (That was a smack-heel-of-the-palm-to-forehead moment for me. Of course! Instant tidy storage.)
Well, I didn’t make it, but the people who did said they followed Michael Symon’s recipe. I could link to it, but the link would be longer than the recipe:
Place bacon on a sheet tray and cook until crisp, about 25 minutes. Melt chocolate in double boiler over low heat. Dip crisp bacon in chocolate and place back on sheet tray.
Sprinkle with almonds and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until ready to serve.
Me, too. Since I’m a girl, I got my engagement ring up one nostril and the wedding band up the other. It looks really funny, but it did make me breathe better for a few seconds!
I moved from Florida to Minnesota back in 02’. About a year later I get some kind of letter in the mail saying I have $3000 of unclaimed money sitting in Florida and all I have to do is send my SS# and signature to some Florida PO Box, they will keep $50 and send me a check for the rest.
The letter almost immediately went into the trash but I thought I’d start a thread here titled “This is a scam, right?”
Most people agreed it was suspect and said to trash it.
One doper however told me that if I really had unclaimed money in FL I could find out for free and he gave me a link to do so.
I used the link, it said “yes” I did have $3K, and told me how to contact the state of FL to claim it free of charge.
(it was a disputed $3K my employer was giving me for relocation that I had given up on, they didn’t have a forwarding address since I was temporarily living with a friend)
I got into a long discussion the other night with a stranger in a bar. He believed the moon landings were fake. I didn’t change his mind, but with how much I made his wife roll her eyes, I’m pretty sure that he didn’t get any that night.
I’ve used a lot of recommendations from this board, but I can’t say the SDMB made me do that. What it did make me do was realize that I’m not as smart as I thought I was (I suspect a lot of people already knew that), and to be a bit more humble.
The Dope (and some very wonderful Dopers) helped me through some tough times in my life and played a big role in inspiring me to stop feeling sorry for myself and to take action. I’ve had a great few years and looking forward to more good times. I guess it would have probably happened without the Dope, but I still feel like the reality check you all gave me played a role in me getting my life back together.
Why are we supposed to stick wedding rings up our nose?
