I honestly don’t remember, but if it was anything like most of my birthdays, I went to work, didn’t tell anybody about “my special day”, went out to dinner with my wife, and maybe watched a movie instead of just regular TV. That’s about it.
Two weeks ago, I threw a big karaoke party at an hotel for my family and friends, then took the actual birthday off work. It was my fortieth, though. Normally I just go for a few drinks and a nice meal.
Went to A&W with Mrs. FtG for a root beer, fries and a Mama burger. Of course, the only one in our area is one of those combo A&W/KFCs so they didn’t have an official Mama burger. (No, I don’t go for Papa burgers since cheese on a burger is double-plus-ungood.)
It’s a childhood thing.
(There was a family thing a few days earlier on the weekend that passed for being my birthday party.)
Me.
Mmkay accept me as a friend, bitch
It was a Tuesday. I went to work.
Birthdays aren’t a big deal to me. Although my birthday in 2010 is worth looking forward to - I can retire that day.
I was visiting my parents in Colorado and got to experience a real-life Seinfeld moment. In the morning, Pop called the restaurant we wanted to go to, and made a reservation. When we arrived at the appointed time, we were told they don’t make reservations on homecoming weekend and someone made a mistake. I knew Pop would be pissed (he was parking the car) so I tried the immortal line “Oh, you can take a reservation but you can’t hold a reservation” to no avail. We drove around looking for a good, uncrowded place (Pop doesn’t like to wait) and finally ended up at a Country Buffet. It was perfectly fine (Pop likes all-you-can-eat) but he felt bad it wasn’t a nicer place.
We went home for dessert and presents (the mini-chopper I asked for, and a beautiful pottery mug/soup bowl). So, nice but fraught with upheaval there for a while.
[off-topic]I got the best “reveal” there. We were on a bus tour and the guide did an excellent thing. He kept our attention up the hill the whole way: “On your right you’ll see blah blah blah” all the way until finally, “And on your left you’ll see…Paris!” and it worked because a huge gasp went up and we were all blown away by the view. Nice job, dude! [/off-topic]
My birthday was on a Saturday this year, and since I like to take the day off work for my birthday (I have my own business, I can do that sort of thing), I declared Friday to be “Jessica Day” instead and gave my brother/co-worker the day off. My other co-worker was already off that day, so he played a round of “Jessica Day” golf.
I told my brother that in order to have the day off, he had to promise to tell people that the reason he had the day off was “because Jessica is awesome!” I talked to his sister-in-law later and she told me he indeed told her that
On Jessica Day I slept in, played with my dog, had my boyfriend follow me around for some shopping (not something he or I usually do), we went out for pizza, and then we saw Hot Fuzz.
The next day, my actual birthday, was also my not-quite-yet-sister-in-law’s wedding shower and I was really surprised and honored when they brought out an ice cream cake just for me!
I also came home from the shower to not one but TWO deliveries of flowers from my cousin and my friend.
I had a really, really awesome birthday this year.
Mine was 13 days ago - it was a Wednesday but I didn’t have to work. A friend from work took me out for lunch, which was just lovely. Then I went to my parent’s house for dinner and Mum cooked a roast. Mmmm… two meals I didn’t have to make myself. THAT’S a birthday.
The following day my best friend came to town and stayed with me overnight. Haven’t seen her in months. We had a ball together, shopping and dining and giggling. We also did something a little special - she came with me to my first ultrasound and we saw my baby for the first time. How incredibly exciting!
On the Saturday night my brother and his wife came to town and we went out to dinner together, again with two co-workers (actually, my brother works at the same place, so technically I went to dinner with three co-workers) and it was just delicious. Afterwards, we went to my local bar to see my favourite local band play. It’s been a few months since I managed to make it to one of their shows, and they were sweet enough to make a fuss of me when I showed. They put on a great evening and we all had a wonderful time (it’s nice to know they still sound good even when I’m drinking water instead of Bacardi all night).
This birthday was a good one
My birthday was back in January. I don’t really remember it. It was on a Thursday. I think we probably went out to dinner. We usually do. I think my mom came down that weekend and took me shopping. That’s usually what my birthday is like.
My birthday is this Wednesday : ) while I have to spend the day in class, in the evening I’m heading out to dinner with a bunch of friends, then to a joint birthday party at a bar with some other people whose birthday it is this week also (strangely enough).
Last year, I had just moved away to school so I spent much the day in class and receiving phone calls from people back home wishing happy birthday. I went out later that evening. The cabbie pulled over to let us out, but he was not fully off to the side as I thought he was (stopped in a no-stop zone). As I was getting out of the cab onto the street, which is a main thoroughfare that was not busy at the time, a city bus sped by and smashed into the door, taking it out of my hand and bending it clear back towards the driver’s door. It made a THUNK-THUNK-THUNK noise as it banged a bunch of times along the length of the bus, narrowly missing taking my leg with it. Note to self: ALWAYS climb over to the sidewalk side to get out of cars. It gave me a good scare, but the rest of the night went off without a hitch.
I definitely did not have anal bleaching, that’s for sure.
I lost the gift certificate.
On my actual birthday, I saw the therapist and went to chorus rehearsal. Whee. I was pretty depressed at the time . Getting much better.
My husband did take me out to dinner the weekend before and get me mostly trashed on cheap champagne. I guess that’s something.
I cooked dinner for my extended family. My parents brought wine. My Aunt and Uncle brought dessert. It was a nice evening.
It was a Saturday this year, just over a month ago. It also happened to be my 40th birthday, so we had a few friends over. I drank *way *too much Scotch, and have absolutely no recollection of the last few hours of the evening.
It was the first time in my life I ever drank so much that I can’t remember what happened. I know I “slept” through part of the evening, but there is also photographic evidence that I was awake and active for at least part of the time…I just can’t recall a damn thing.
I figure I’ll try it again when I’m 80
Wished everyone a Merry Christmas.
Come join yellowval (whose birthday is Sunday) and me (whose birthday is Friday) for some virtual cake this weekend.
Hmmm, that was back in July. A Wednesday. I think my wife bought me dinner. And a bourbon. Other than that, not much. Birthdays aren’t eagerly anticipated at my age.
Took the day off, curled up with a good book, emailed some friends, went out for a long walk with the dog, and had dinner at a restaurant with my family. I figure I’ll go for the big blowout next year.
