That’s what my daughter asked me today. I had to really think about it. I think that I wanted to be the Green Hornet, who was a character in a television spin-off of Batman and Robin. I was probably about five when this came on. I remember he was cool. Now, looking back, Kato was cooler, but hey, Kato worked for the Green Hornet. A bit later I wanted to be an explorer in the old west, since I was reading stories about the mountain men about then. I don’t really recall wanting to be a doctor, fireman, cop, or any of most of the stereotypical young boy fantasies back then. Although we did play soldiers a lot, so maybe a soldier would have been cool. If I could have keeled over from a gunshot in a melodramatic fashion.
When I was six years old I was completely convinced that I was from another planet! And I was absolutely sure that the mothership one day soon would come to get me.
Hey if you knew my family you would understand.
A teenager.
I used to tell my teacher that every day. Of course, I acheived that, and then zipped right through those teenage years not appreciating them.
I remember we had to write something in class about what we wanted to be when we grew up. I wrote that I wanted to be a shopkeeper, because I wanted to be able to use the cash register and press all the buttons.
My teacher told me that was silly and I should choose something else. So I basically lied and wrote that I wanted to be a hairdresser. She was content with that.
Now tell me, is a hairdresser really any more special than a shopkeeper?
You know what I do for a living now? I work in a bike shop, in the office, and I get to use the cash register all the time! I’m living my dream!!
Hmmm . . . I don’t recall wanting to be anything in particular when I was six years old - except when I was outdoors in the summer; then I wanted not to be bitten by bugs.
A paleontologist.
I think around that time I really, really wanted to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, for real. I was obsessed with them. If their was an action figure featuring them, I had to have it. I watched the tv show religiously whenver it was on.
I couldn’t decide if I wanted to be a cowboy or an Indian!
(you could blame all those black and white western shown on tv in the late 60s)
I wanted to drive around all day long in a Lamborghini, solving crimes. I really liked Miami Vice back in the day.
I want the same thing today as when I was 6…a princess.
An astronomer. And I was one too, for all of one summer. Wow, it was not at all like I thought it would be, yeesh.
I wanted to be one Elvis’ back-up singers.
Pope.
I was a little too aspirational back then.
I was going to have a bone store.
If a someone broke a bone, they could come to my store and buy a new one.
A little ahead of my time.
A garbage man.
Throughout childhood, I always wanted to be a scientist. My brother, on the other hand, had more imagination. At various times, he wanted to be second baseman for the Chicago Cubs, shortstop for the Chicago Cubs, bestselling author, world chess champion, and several other jobs.
I wanted to work at a gas station. It was during the oil crisis when everybody was saying how expensive gasoline was, so I figured the guys who pump gas must be making lots of money.
Well into college, my father was still teasing me about that.
When I was six I wanted to be : Wonder Woman
Some days I feel like I might be getting there but then I realise no I’ve only reached Average Woman status.
I wanted to be a chemist. Which is to say that I wanted to sit around in a lab mixing various liquids together and looking at the pretty colors.
I wanted to be either a heavy equipment operator or an astronaut. Today, seeing what they do with that robot arm on the Shuttle, I could have done both!
