What do/can you sleep under in summer?

Summer is rolling around in the southern hemisphere and i’m finding it very uncomfortable to sleep under a duvet but like to have something to wrap up in. Is it ‘usual’ to sleep with just a sheet? I have the base sheet that goes over the mattress but what about over that, do you just buy another sheet the same or are the special sheets that you sleep under? Failing that does anybody have any suggestions about what to sleep under that would be lighter than a duvet? As you can probably tell I am not very domesticated and would feel like a complete tool asking about this in a shop!

I can’t fall asleep without a weight on me unless temperatures exceed 35ºC. So, in the winter I sleep all curled up under a sheet plus whatever amount of blankets is necessary, in decent-temperatures summer I fall asleep under a sheet and a lightweight duvet or blanket (both of which get promptly kicked off the bed as soon as I fall asleep) and in it’s-too-hot-to-think weather I fall asleep on top of the sheets and doing my best to avoid touching anything other than cotton sheet or air.

Dad was the same, so I blame genetics.

Mom sleeping arrangements are… complicated. They involve a lightweight sheet (maybe a lightweight blanket) but five pillows. It’s like a fort of pillows with something snoring inside.

Littlebro sleeps under a sheet in the summer (except if it’s too-hot-to-think, when he moves above it); Middlebro uses a lightweight blanket except in too-hot-to-think weather, when he’s the only one sleeping under the sheet. His wife (who had never shared a room) thought he was weird until that day when the subject came up and it turned out each person in the combined family has different habits.

Late late…

Depending on which country you live in, there will be different combinations of sheets available. In Spain the most common thing to buy is these sets of base sheet, top sheet and pillow (separates are a relative novelty); in other countries it’s base sheets and duvets. In the US I’ve seen both.

A regular sheet set will come with a fitted sheet that goes over the mattress, and a topsheet, which is what you sleep under. In the summer, that’s all I use, and sometimes only pull the topsheet up to my waist, if at all.

We have two comforters - the heavy winter one and the light summer one. I add the light summer one to my side of the bed in winter since I sleep much colder than my husband. I always have at least a light comforter on the bed; I stick limbs out as required to cool off.

I just use a sheet. I prefer flannel, but my girlfriend doesn’t like it, so I’ve been doing without.

Beneath that, either what my mother gave me or loose gym shorts and a t-shirt. I’ve never had pajamas as an adult.

If it’s less than 75F (~24C) I use a sheet and a lightweight blanket like this one with a looser weave. If it’s above that, just a sheet, but above 85F I don’t use either, which is the only time I can bear being completely uncovered while sleeping because I’m like Nava in that regard.

Yeah, a top sheet. Do they not have those in Australia? In the US a “sheet set” somes with a fitted sheet for the mattress, a couple of pillow cases, and a top sheet. The top sheet is what you sleep under. Usually its much cheaper to buy the sheet set than all the items in the set individually, but if all you need is a top sheet, you can buy one of those.

Also, a sheet set is the sort of present moms like to give when you have a new apartment.

I have a silk stuffed duvet which seems to have amazing qualities. It’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I don’t know why it works only that since we bought it the only fights my husband and I have over blankets is who is stealing from whom.

can’t sleep in temps less than cold enough to hang meat - winter or summer. i’d rather be too cold than too warm any time so i use a bedspread and a lightweight blanket and sheet year-round.

i have a two story townhouse, so heat rises and the master bedroom is on the second floor. the house is usually set about 66 degrees f in winter and about 68 degrees f in the summer.

i usually drape a second blanket to about my hips. something about needing the feel of the weight on my legs helps me sleep.

I’m sure they do but i’m not having much luck finding them online and I wanted to be forearmed with knowledge before wandering into a shop. Most of the sheet sets I see listed online don’t break down the contents and usually show a duvet cover so i’m not sure if the set is pillowcases, fitted sheet and duvet cover or something different. I guess that ‘flat sheet’ could be what i’m looking for, might have to bite the bullet and wander into the den of scented candles, tealights and baffling jargon to find what I need!

“Flat sheet” is exactly what you’re looking for.

There are places in the world that think a duvet is all you need, year-round? shudder

I sleep with just a top sheet from about mid-November through until about mid-April.

It’s exactly the same in Australia.

I just take the duvet out, cast it aside, and sleep under the cover, rather than cluttering my house with extraneous flat sheets which I’ll only need for a very brief time each year.

I crank up the a/c to max and sleep under the same heavy blanket I always sleep under. YMMV

I cannot sleep without air conditioning. I cannot sleep without being under a blanket. Therefore I could not sleep under the conditions you posit.

When I’ve got some extra money, I go on ebay and buy a complete set of 100% silk sheets, with as high a momme weight as possible. These sets are not a good value because they’re at least $150.00 and they don’t last too long, being as I wash and dry them once a week. But, they feel heavenly. They’re warm in winter, cool in summer, and wick away any perspiration I produce. If you decide to splurge on a set, be sure to get regular pedicures and maybe the sheets will last a little longer. My rough heels have shredded countless fitted sheets .:smack:

Just wear socks to bed =/

In summer, I like sleeping in and under as little as possible. No a/c if I can get away with it; wife differs greatly on that…

In winter, I like the room cold and the blankets warm.

No one sleeps under a bedspread?

Usually I keep the bedspread at my knees and pull up if I get cold.

The top sheet is usually at my shoulders unless it’s really hot.

add a blanket in the winter.

Flat Sheet and very inefficient blanket in the summer time. The sheet covers my entires body to the shoulder, the blanket covers from the waist down. My summer thermostat is set at 76 deg f.

In the winter, nearly the same setup, with a comforter that covers my entire body. My Winter thermostat at night is set at 63 deg F.
