What do I do for fun after my wisdom teeth are removed?

If your dentist says anything or prescribes you anthing that sounds the slightest bit hinky–get a second opinion right away. Like, now. Woulda saved me a week of pain and throwing up if I hadn’t thought “Hey, he’s a doctor, right? He knows what he’s doing.”

Grrr.

BTW: I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but 1/4 tab of codine every 6 hours is not a theraputic dose, Theraflu will not make you feel better, and there is all sorts of stuff they can do to a dry socket to make it feel better (other than re-abrading the bone to make it bleed).

I have no idea if mine were impacted or not because they never broke the surface.

I did the salt water, took my anti-biotics, never touched but one of the hydrocodones, and was fine about 6 hours after I was done.

Although I do know that asking a dental surgeon in the middle of cutting open your jaw ‘Hey you think you can put those in a bag for me?’ makes them freak out.

It indeed was that bad for a couple days. Then I was just sick from the pills and in pain, instead of being sick from the blood and the pills and in pain. Eventually, the pain subsided and I threw the damned pills away (most of the bottle).

It took me a good while to get back on my game, so to speak. My only consolation was that I avoided a dry socket. I really would have been hurting had I gotten dry sockets.

I had all 4 removed. They were quite impacted, but I got local anesthetic and something else (I was awake and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t nitrous oxide)

after removal, I was at the oral surgoens office for maybe half an hour, then went home (I was a senor in high school, mom drove). felt a bit woozy on the drive back, but turning the heat off and having cool air (it was aprilish in Wisconsin) blow on me helped a lot. Then took 600mg ibuprofin regularly (mom got me up at like 3 am so I would reamin on schedule, at least for the 1st night) Only changed gauze once (before the 1st night). Pretty gross, but handled it. Don’t remeber what I ate. I know I requested (and got) a refill on the ibuprofin, but I don’t remeber agony but then again it was almost 20 years ago

Am I mistaken, or is this combination contraindicated due to synergistic toxicity?

Okay, now you guys are scaring me.

I’m scheduled to have my top two wisdom teeth taken out on Saturday (9/11 is a great day to have your gums sliced open, huh?) and I wasn’t really worried about it until I read this thread. The one on the upper right side came out a few weeks ago, and I assume that they’ll have to cut the gum to do any “clean up work”. Is this true? For some reason, I hadn’t really considered the fact that my gums would bleed excessively, or that I would be queasy from swallowing blood. Just thinking about it makes me ill.

I’m not sure if I should be worried about being groggy from the anesthesia. I’ve had general twice before and woke up feeling fine. Are there different types of general anesthesia? Do the dentists use something different that will have me feeling stupid for the rest of the day?

My regular dentist already told me about the 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off ice pack deal. But he told me to stick two bags of frozen vegetables in each leg of a pair of pantyhose and tie it around my head. My dentist is a little weird.

So…just how much blood/pain should I expect? And for how long? Should I schedule a vacation day Monday?

Keep in mind. . .

all that pain medication says “do not use alcoholic beverages while under the influence” or some shit like that.

But that’s just like advice like “you shouldn’t party too hard”.

I RECOMMEND washing pain pills down with a beer or two. It ain’t gonna kill ya. It’s just gonna fuck ya up a little more.

I had all four wisdom teeth out at the same time. All of my teeth had come through and none were impacted or abscessed.

I just took a Valium and had a local anesthetic. I was still awake. Awake enough to hear the Channel Locks, or whatever it is they use, cracking the teeth. I could feel them pulling on my teeth too.

They gave me the little syringe deal, packed my mouth with cotton, and sent me on my merry way. I even went to work that night (2nd shift). I never took any more of my pain pills, Vicodin.

All in all, no big deal. Not like when I broke my foot and thought I could just walk off the pain  .

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

I’d recommend not listening to Trunk. The warnings are there for a reason. And, yeah, it can kill you.

Zamboni ** and CityGirl**, make sure and check back and let us know how things went…

Sorry to scare you! General anasthesia’s a good thing - some things are just best not remembered (see “Having Impacted Teeth Broken Apart” section), so you don’t have to worry about the actual procedure. The recovery is more icky than actually painful, especially if you have good pain management medication, or at least it was for me. You’ll be fine. With any medical thing, my advice always is if it hurts even a little bit, make a huge fuss. The sooner you tell them you’re uncomfortable, the faster they can heap pain meds on you.

Good luck to you both  .

I know. Good Lord, I hope Trunk isn’t giving amateur medical advice to friends.

Thank’s jellyblue, for telling me what I want to hear  , though I was lead to believe by the dentist that I would be better after a few days. All I really fear now is Dry Socket.

After this operation, I will have 24 of my original 32 adult teeth. I had four others removed when I was 11, but they were grown in and I was awake. It wasn’t much worse than losing a tooth naturally.

There are so few opportunities in life to combine prescription strength pain killers with alcohol.

Don’t waste yours.

After my knee surgery, it was Oxycodone and Beer all weekend long. And maybe a little wacky thrown in.

Instead of beer, you might want some straight vodka or gin for their antiseptic benefits.

AND IT AIN’T GONNA KILL YA.

I’m not saying “wash it down with a beer and go drive the car.” For god’s sake, don’t do that. And don’t take 10 painkillers and half a bottle of whiskey. You need to build up to that.

But shit, the recommend dosage and a couple beers will get you just right.

NO. NO. NO. I am not a physician, and even I can tell you that if ORIGINAL medication referenced, Tylenol 3, contains acetaminophen, which it does, you should NOT take it with alcoholic beverages.

The combination, and even too much acetaminophen, can and does cause liver failure. And it is insidious failure: if someone were to follow your post and then only a day or so later realize that it was incorrect information, by then it might be TOO LATE to save their life. I don’t want to speculate on the exact amount needed for toxicity, but consider that people have died from just a handful of times of the amount of acetaminophen normally taken, and alcohol makes that worse. Sure, you may say they might be outlying cases (or they may not be, I’m not sure), but do you want to take the chance that you’re one of them?

I do not normally post such confident information so boldly presented. But I don’t want anyone to die.

The only reason I was not sure in my post was that I wasnt sure if the med in question contained acetaminophen: I cannot say how much the opioid component is or isn’t a danger when combined with alcohol, but it pales in comparison to the effects of alcohol and acetaminophen. DONT DO IT.

This post is not to be construed as a rip on Tylenol, but a warning about mixing two generic chemicals the poster happened to reference.

You need to shut up. It can and has killed people before, and that mixture will kill people in the future. Just because it didn’t kill you doesn’t mean it won’t kill anyone. I can only hope that no one takes your “advice” before your posts in this thread are deleted.

How irresponsible of you. You ought to be ashamed.

You heard them Zamboni – it’s fine to take alcohol and narcotics.

But only drink beer if they give you Tylenol 3.

Yes, then you, too, can acquire brain damage and dispense bad advice on the internet.

YO!

The guy asked for something fun to do while hopped up on painkillers this weekend.

Mixing alcohol and narcotics is one of those things.

Sure, it might kill ya, but your chances are probably better than if you went bungee jumping in the Columbia River Gorge. And I’d tell him to do that, too, if he asked for fun things to do while in Oregon.

Hey, moron! I am fully aware of the dangers of mixing alcohol and medication, and whatever you did, I pity the consequences you felt. I did not ask how to so get fucked up that I have no idea who I am. This is not my idea of fun! Besides, I’m not legal and I don’t drink anyway. I wouldn’t take your advice if you paid me to.

What I meant by fun was what low-key activities I can do.

Now, I originally came here to talk about my operation. At 8:45 this morning (Thur.) I went in. I had a mask that distributed Nitrous Oxide placed over my nose, which calmed me down very well. Then I had an IV inserted in my left arm, which delivered the Knockout Juice, whatever it was. The last thing I remember before going out was the surgeon asking about whether I had information about a new tractor (I work for a tractor company, parts distribution). This was not an hallucination. Then I noticed that I felt a little drowsy, so I closed my eyes, Bam! I was out.

The next thing I remember is a very dim recollection of trying to get out of the surgery chair, but an aide said “No, not yet.” After that I remember waking up very clearly in the recovery room. Then Zamboni Mom, a Brother, and three Sisters came in, all small. I wasn’t sure if I should have felt a little ashamed for being seen in such a weak position, which was lying down. But I didn’t care because I was feeling very dreamy  . The time between going out and waking up felt like a few minutes, but the surgery lasted about an hour, I think. losing this amount of time was the most disorienting feeling I have ever had.

I lay there for a few minutes before another aide came in and changed the gauze. Then I left with The Entourage, Zamboni Mom driving of course. The ride home, which was about 35-40 minutes, felt like it took about 15 minutes because I was asleep most of the time, but it sure didn’t feel like it. It was the best sleep I ever had  .

When I got home, Zamboni Mom stayed for a few minutes to help with anything I might need, but I wanted to sleep. She sent over another Zamboni Brother, the second oldest in the family at age 17, to help with anything and to watch me, I guess. He didn’t need to do much. We both just watched TV and ate some food, and I slept a lot. We watched four episodes of Family Guy and the movie Office Space. That is a great movie, very dark and funny, which I like.

I ate three cups of pudding and some Ramen noodles that I crushed into small pieces. I ate the noodles very slowly in very small bites because I needed the carbohydrates so I would stop feeling nauseous. I use the term ate loosely. I placed the noodles on my tongue and swollowed them whole without chewing.

Now at about 7:15, the bleeding has stoppped almost entirely. FAIK, it has stopped now. I can’t tell because I need a flashlight to see into my mouth via the mirror, and I don’t have a flashlight  . My bottom lip and chin are still numb, and I am feeling no pain in my mouth. I don’t expect that to last, but I’m ready with painkillers and antinflammatories.

Now I’m over the initial dizziness and nausea and feeling fine with the exception of numb lip and chin. It’s getting annoying, though I suppose it’s better than the alternative of pain.

I think I’ll be fine by Monday. If not, then I’ll call in sick. I might do that if I feel fine, though.

Trunk, you’re not a doctor. Stop giving bad medical advice . . . NOW!

Ah, Zamboni, you’ve given me hope. It really already stopped bleeding? Let me know if it starts again.

Feel better!
