I want to install a computer filter that requires 10.6.6. The Mac update series is so confusing. What do I need on the computer to install this level? What’s the cheapest method? If I buy at this link, can I then upgrade for free to 10.6.6?
What version of Mac OS is currently running on the system? Snow Leopard is five years old. The update series is as follows:
10.0: Cheetah (2001)
10.1: Puma (2001)
10.2: Jaguar (2002)
10.3: Panther (2003)
10.4: Tiger (2005)
10.5: Leopard (2007)
10.6: Snow Leopard (2009)
10.7: Lion (2011)
10.8: Mountain Lion (2012)
10.9: Mavericks (2013)
10.10: Yosemite (2014)
If you have an older version than Snow Leopard running on your computer, I believe that the disc you linked to on eBay will work. If you have a newer version than that, then the disc will probably not be useful to you. I would try running the filter anyhow and see if it works. However, some older software can no longer run on the newer OS versions (those since Lion.)
If you post more specifics, we can probably help more; your OP is very vague as it stands.
If you buy 10.6, then all updates after that are free.
You can buy Snow Leopard directly from Apple for $20.
What vintage of Mac are you dealing with, and what is this filter that needs 10.6.6?
Apple put the sticker on the foot, where it could of course be damaged and unreadable. Their antipathy for their customers is amazing.
I think it’s the second one listed here, but with 2GB RAM now. What are the differences between the White iMac "Core 2 Duo" models?: EveryMac.com
Covenant Eyes current product needs 10.6.6.
You’re right- they should engrave the model number on the center of the screen…
You can find the serial number in System Profiler, and from their get the exact model.
But, I’m sure that any of these are old enough to run Snow Leopard.
