What do I want for lunch?

I found the thread too late to vote, but you ate what I would have recommended anyway. I’ve eaten salad for lunch for days now, and I think I can treat myself to some pho tomorrow. Your thread has gotten my tastebuds on tiptoe for some raw beef pho. And I wish I could accompany it with some Vietnamese iced coffee with canned milk, but that’d be too much of a good thing.

How is Bell Thai?

Hey Johnny, can I get a phonetic pronunciation of this? It sounds awesome, but I’d like to order it correctly if I can find a decent Vietnamese place in Chattanooga.

Thanks!

The first part is all you need. It looks like, and many people will pronounce it “fo” (as in: fe fi FO fum), but that is wrong. It’s properly pronounced “fuh,” like “Elmer FUDD” minus “Elmer” and the D’s.

The second part is just Vietnamese for “with the lot,” which means you get everything. Variations can include chicken or more frightening ingredients, but beef is the classic.

Sadly, I left my second delicious Subway Club on Honey Oat bread in the fridge at my office.
:frowning:

As I said earlier, Subway is certainly not gourmet or something that I just could not live without, but their sandwiches are generally fresh, tasty, inexpensive and (for the most part) healthy—I have never understood the hate that many on SDMB seem to have for Subway, but I suppose those self-styled food critics are somehow enjoying the feeling of being superior to the masses with their haughty tastes and attitudes…

I generally pronounce it ‘fuh dahk beet’. They understand what I want.

To be fair, Subway sandwiches really aren’t all that great – especially the veggie. That’s why I keep Sriracha sauce at my desk. But they’re generally fresh, and some are inexpensive. I like their tuna, but for $7.50 I’d rather get something better.

It’s cold here today, so I just had some soup and a toasted cheese and vegemite sandwich.

Oh, that sounds good. I’m ‘souped out’ after that big lunch, but I have plenty of Vegemite and some nice sharp cheddar. I think I know what’s for lunch mañana.

Have you been to Bell Thai on 4th?

Yes. Not bad. Not like L.A., but good enough for me. A friend didn’t care for it though. Siam Sam was kind enough to send me the Thai phrase in Roman characters and in Thai script that says ‘As hot as Thai people eat’. I try to go there once a month.

Perhaps because many actually don’t enjoy Subway? I don’t like Subway, because to me it smells terrible and tastes marginally better. There is just something about the smell of a Subway that really puts me off. And yet I like McDonald’s, which has a distinct smell of its own, so go figure…

I think the smell is the lettuce. Lettuce often has a smell I don’t care for.

I’d rather eat McDonald’s than Subway, but Subway is healthier and closer.

Maybe marginally, and it depends on the metric you’re using. A footlong veggie is about 460 calories, the same as a McDonald’s Big and Tasty. If you’re watching carbs, that footlong is hell on you. If you’re watching fat, that Big & Tasty isn’t terribly good. Sodium? The footlong is worse. Fiber & vitamins? Advantage footlong. For my diet, I would actually prefer the Big & Tasty with its distribution of protein, fat, and carbs, and lower sodium content, but I wouldn’t make either a regular part of my diet.

B/c it’s Plastic Fantastic Fast Food? I dunno… I like those hole in the wall places with the plastic menu boards and grinders…YUM!
