Ah, we have some of those, too, but probably not as many as the UK (my impression, may or may not be true) and we haven’t formalized them with a specific term.
I’m guessing, being a much smaller country, our farms are more accessible to city dwellers, so lend themselves better to operating retail outlets that will attract enough customers to make it worthwhile.
It is a huge industry in the Cape Town Wine lands, here in South Africa. Wine farms have diversified into local produce, extremely high class restaurants, kid’s play areas, horse riding, small zoos, museums and more. I reckon many of them make more out of the “side activities” than actual wine farming, especially as there are so many wine farms around.
But almost inevitably, the patrons will also buy some wine from them, so a general win.
I love it, because they give me, as a single dad, a diverse number of options to entertain my kids within a short distance from my home. Also, Cape Town & surrounds is home to some of the finest wineries in the world, so I get to go out and buy spectacular wine at what are described at “cellar prices” (though the markup is there anyway)
I’m sure Kate & William appreciate their local farm stall for similar reasons. Also… just to get the kids out and about.
The Windsor Farm Shop is pretty much the closest shop to their house at Windsor and is only just outside one of the gates to the area of the park closed to the public. It is also effectively owned by his dad. So it wouldn’t be surprising if they sometimes shop there. If one was being cynical, one might even suggest that this was a publicity stunt to advertise the shop.
No, it doesn’t. There are several American celebrities who have managed to maintain their private lives. Vin Diesel springs to mind, as do Pedro Pascal, Cillian Murphy, and Margot Robbie. Even Dolly Parton; millions of Americans worship the ground she walks on but we know almost nothing about her private affairs.
Huh. It’s a thing around here. We can them farm stands, but farm shop is a better name, and i immediately understood what it meant. I shop at one regularly.
Forgive me if this has already been posted. I tried to catch up before adding it, but I’m more than 150 posts behind and there just isn’t time right now.
Anyway, the video of Kate and Wills leaving the farm shop. She looks a little peaked to me:
Though it will be pointed out that the Hollywood celebs’ families were not appointed by Congress to be the embodiment of the nation, and they are not financed off the public till (not any more than any other corporate business person, anyway). So I can see how British subjects may feel “hey, you owe us letting us know what’s up with you” …even though it may be at times really something not polite to banter around in public or relevant to the state of the State.
That would be ignoring the quote and the discussion to which I was replying. But I would also point out that nobody is paying Harry or Meghan anymore, and they are still ravenously consumed by the British press.
I have to inform my employer when I can’t come into work for medical reasons and to the extent the British Royal Family are de facto goverment employees I feel it is entirely reasonable for them to inform the government/the public that they will not be performing their job duties for X number of days due to a medical problem.
However, just as I am not obligated to give my employer full access to all my medical records neither should the Royals have to disclose all details to the public.
Where it gets fuzzy is if, for example, my boss sees me out shopping while I’m on medical leave - am I shirking or is this a reasonable thing while still not being permitted to work? (This actually came up for me last September). But that’s something to work out between employer and employee.
Likewise, I can see some questions about if Kate is seen out and about during her recovery period, but I don’t get the sense that that is happening here. It’s not “oh, great - she’s getting better!” or “Huh - she can go shopping but not cut ribbons? How does that work?” but something a lot darker and nastier.
If you believe some people the publics curiosity over Diana is exactly what killed her.
It stands to reason her sons and their families are secretive as they can be.
It would just save paper, ink and the public gnashing of teeth if they’d just tell the story. If she doesn’t feel like having a picture taken they could just say, “Kate looks like crap at the moment and prefers no pictures forever floating around to remind her. As soon as she’s up for it, there will be pics.”
As South Park lampooned they have a weird way of letting everyone know they want to be left alone. Staying out of the spotlight probably wouldn’t satisfy the British press but in the U.S. they would largely be ignored.
More than a few. Partially accomplished by being relatively normal and boring outside of work. Ryan Gosling married Eva Mendes and no one knew. They were together for years and it was basically unknown until they started having kids. Harrison Ford lives away from Hollywood with his famous wife and you don’t hear about him unless he crashes a plane. Celebrities with boring personal lives are mostly ignored.
Diana was a phenomenon. By definition it’s a rare thing. As much as the British press might want to manufacture another phenomenon I don’t see anyone in the Royal Family getting close to that level of interest. The current situation wouldn’t even be a situation if there were two sentences added to the original press release.
One does not have to be an American, or resident in America, to be famous in America which is the very loose definition of celebrity but one that could apply here.
I live in a relatively rural part of New Jersey which is a densely populated state. We have quite a few around here. In general they are either called “farm store” or “farm stand.” The nomenclature depends on the size of the store.
Those people are famous everywhere. But “American celebrity” and “A celebrity in America” aren’t synonymous to me. I would have characterized them as American celebrity, Chilean celebrity (maybe Chilean/American), Irish celebrity and Australian celebrity.
Pascal is now a naturalized American citizen, think he’s probably dual citizenship with Chile. Definitely a hyphenated American in the strongest sense of the word, I would argue he’s both a Chilean and an American celebrity.
Yes. I understand. Both William and Harry have said publicly how they feel about what the press did to their Mother.
It seems to me they would have sensitivity about the press butting into their lives. Which they have very little control over…after all they were born into this family.
Unlike Kate. She married into it.
She surely knew what the curiosity over every aspect of her life would be. She had to have been told by William, the palace. Someone.
I wouldn’t say I am all that royal curious. But, I will admit, I just effing wanna know what the heck the big deal is.
