Babies and weddings are such huge cash grabs in the US, now. I don’t have anything against having a gender reveal party if you aren’t expecting gifts. A little get-together with cake is one thing, but an all out celebration is ridiculous, especially if you’re already having a shower as well.
I’m against them because
- What’s the big deal? We found out our kids sex in the ultrasound and just told people. It sounds to me like just another attention grabber.
- Sadly, some children do not make it thru miscarriage or sorts. I think it’s more important to just have a healthy baby.
The only reveal party I’ll attend is the one where the happy parents show us the ultrasound pics of their incipient baby velociraptor. Anything else is just an anticlimax.
I detest going to any party like a hen party, baby shower, bridal shower, reveal party … when invited, I find a nice card, add a personal message and find a suitable gift. If I know the folks are short of money, I do a gift card if their wish list is finished though for a friend who just had a baby recently I got her a stroller off her list, and another friend who has slightly older kids, I got her a set of 12 maid visits [she had a c-section, this way she doesn’t have to clean house for the 6 week healing period] a silver spoon and cup for the little boy, and one of those spiffy art easels for the older kids.
What do I think? They’re stupid and sexist.
In the same area a day later another GRP kaboom. Luckily no one was hurt this time.
Look, if the “kit” is so explosive you need to stand back and set it off with a rifle, maybe this isn’t such a good idea.
As to the parties themselves: Your kid has a gender (you think), and you want congrats because???
Lots of “There’s people enjoying stuff I don’t enjoy. They are stupid!”
And “sexist”? come on.
Well, if you think about it, they really are. That’s kind of the point. ![]()
How long before someone throws a conception party? Or even a “trying for a baby” party?
“Trying for a baby” IS the party.
You mean TV has been lying to me? It seems every show where the couple is trying to have a baby the guy ends up unhappy about doing his “chore”.
What next, the crime lab doesn’t give you the results of a DNA test in 20 minutes?

This post has warped my fragile little mind.

Noting the peril inherent in amateurs experimenting with explosives, I guess I’ll fall back on some really good advice I picked up from the soundtrack to Hair long long ago, and with which I have yet to find any fault:
“Kids, be free. Be whatever you are, do whatever you want to do – just so long as you don’t hurt anybody.”
Also, pie. Mmmm, pie.
Gender reveal plane crash in Texas.
Fark headline for this: “Any gender-reveal stunt you can walk away from is a good one”
True, so true.
Perhaps trying to fly anywhere near a town called Turkey was tempting Providence (and, yes, I have flown with THY).
Has anyone mentioned yet that the inventor of the gender reveal party has gone on record regretting the idea, because her kid is gender-nonconforming?
I guess some people are incapable of forethought.
A gender reveal sparked a wildfire in California that’s grown to 7,000 acres
My understanding is that it started with very specific social groups, primarily affluent white fundamentalist-type Christians who have strict rules about sexual contact before marriage. Like Elna Baker’s Mormons, they make huge deals over run of the mill things like asking someone to prom. Baker said that she got over the grand gesture when she realized that you can show someone you really like em much more efficiently with fucking. (Less elaborate and difficult to organize and from my point of view much more satisfactory.)
What about the added grief and possible guilty feeling on the part of the mother for having gotten everyone’s hopes up if there is difficulty afterwards and the pregnancy is tragically terminated?
I hope they throw the book at those people. I want the parents jailed, every party-goer fined, the kid taken away from it’s obviously mentally-deficient parents when it is born and the family name stricken from all history. I’ve been watching that fire from my house since it started - it is all of 3 miles from my house and friends have had to evacuate because of it.
