What do you bring to a sick vegetarian?

I can’t very well get her a bowl of chicken noodle soup. What vegetarian options are there? Miso?

I’d very much appreciate a bowl of tomato soup with spiciness adjusted according to suffered condition.

You can make vegetarian noodle soup. If you’re pressed for time, you can buy vegetable broth from the grocery store and prepare the soup as you normally would, omitting the chicken, of course.

A stalk of celery. Obscure referance.

Hearty vegetable soup:

Fry onions, celery and lots of garlic in a saucepan. Add 5-6 cups veggie soup stock (MSG-free, please), some chopped tomatoes (canned or fresh), carrots/potatoes/squash chopped into 1 inch cubes, a handful of pot barley, salt, pepper, herbs, and a can of (rinsed and drained) chick peas. A bit of tumeric never hurts if you’ve got it.

Bring to boil, reduce to simmer. When veggies are soft, remove from heat.

If you want to, add pasta/noodles before serving.

Feed to friend. If she is into cheese, put cheese on top.

+++++

If someone brought me this when I was sick, the gratitude combined with the nutrition would probably cure me right then and there.

If soup is too much trouble, bring potato chips. I’ve never known a vegetarian to turn down those, either.

Depending on what your sick friend can handle . . . macaroni & cheese, juice, soft drinks, pudding, muffins, fresh bakery bread (for toast) and butter.
If you want to pick something up, maybe meatless Chinese dishes or vegetarian pizza.

And bless you. When I came out of the hospital and couldn’t shop, gifts of food were greatly appreciated.

Something comforting that you remember from your childhood. That’s the whole point of food when you’re sick, it makes you feel better by taking you back to the nursery and the days when you were sick and your mother would look after you.

For me it would be a cup of black tea, a soft-boiled egg, dry toast and a bowl of vanilla ice-cream with custard.

My husband demands heavily sugared kids’ cereals, flat 7up and Lemsip, while my former flatmate likes Heinz tomato soup and brown bread.

And creamy mashed potatoes.

For some reason I have “What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor” running through my mind right now.

Agree with the vegetable soup. Maybe sliced-up fruit or fruit juice, too.

just bring them chicken soup, and tell them it’s tofu. if they are sick enough to need it, they won’t know the difference.

when they get better, you’ll have a good laugh together.

Eviladam, that’s horrible. Since this is not the pit, that’s as far as I’ll go.

When I’m sick, I really don’t want chicken noodle soup. Even though I happily eat chicken. When I’m sick I want Tom Kah Gai - Thai spicy coconut lemongrass soup. It can be made with a chicken or vegetarian base, so check with the restaurant before you get it, or get it from a vegetarian restaurant. Bliss!
