What do you call the thing that closes a door?

Is there a name for that hydrolic device that’s up at the top of self-closing doors? We at work, (teachers and staff)couldn’t think of one.

Apparently they’re called hydraulic door closers.

Forgetting the hydraulic part, around these part it’s called “Dad,” or “Honey.” Works with cabinets too. Not so good with toilet seats however.

I thought they’re called dashpots, but my dictionary defines that word as just a generic shock-damping device – so, as dull as it sounds, Ringo’s suggestion is probably correct.

Interesting, I was just looking at one of these thinking “gee, I wonder if this thing has an actual name”.

I’m in a contracting business – we call them “door returns” or “hydraulic returns.”

We install these from time to time in the locksmith buisness.

They are listed in my parts catalog as “door closers”

Other names are also “door returns”

I believe the “Dad” and the “Honey” models do rely in part on some hydraulic functions.

Spring-loaded hinge.

It’s not really hydraulic, but it works very well if you adjust it right.
