This may belong in “Comments on Cecil’s Columns” because it’s regarding this SD column, but I thought we could all give Cecil a hand with this one. I know it’s from way back in 1987 but I have a difficult time believing that people can’t mostly agree on what [the object in question] is called.
I always say “snowglobe” (one word). That seems (or seemed) to be the custom preferred at Disney retail locations, as Disney snowglobes were quite the fad for a while. I should know - my wife and I have a couple dozen.
I recall them being universally recognized as snowglobes since the 70’s. Before that I remember it was not quite that clear, but no specific commonly used names, more in the way of simple descriptions of the thing you shake and it looks like it’s snowing.
Do similar objects which contain no snow, like the California Snowmanqualify as snowglobes?
