What do you call this object?

This may belong in “Comments on Cecil’s Columns” because it’s regarding this SD column, but I thought we could all give Cecil a hand with this one. I know it’s from way back in 1987 but I have a difficult time believing that people can’t mostly agree on what [the object in question] is called.

Poll options taken from column.

It’s called a snow globe, and I never heard it called anything else

What he said. I had no idea this was even an issue.

So much so that I almost suspect Unca Cece of making it up, like I suspect Mythbusters of at times.

Yep.

Agreed.

What PSXer said.

Elsewhere, could be a shopping-mall egg. In this world it’s a snow globe.

Snow Globe get about 1,900,000 google hits.

Yeah, PSXer nailed it on the 1st post. . . (“Snowie?!?!” Seriously?)

Shake 'em ups? I’m not sure what Cecil was smoking that day.

AOL!

I always say “snowglobe” (one word). That seems (or seemed) to be the custom preferred at Disney retail locations, as Disney snowglobes were quite the fad for a while. I should know - my wife and I have a couple dozen.

I recall them being universally recognized as snowglobes since the 70’s. Before that I remember it was not quite that clear, but no specific commonly used names, more in the way of simple descriptions of the thing you shake and it looks like it’s snowing.

Do similar objects which contain no snow, like the California Snowmanqualify as snowglobes?

I call it “Rosebud”, of course.

I voted “snow dome,” but cancel that. I don’t know what I was thinking. It’s snow GLOBE.

Even the filename for the Jpeg agrees: snow_globe%252B%252525281%25252529.jpg

Wow. Is this the first time the Dope has unanimously agreed on something?

And the winner for Poll With the Lowest Standard Deviation goes to…

I think I may have heard it called a snow dome once in all my decades. But calling it any of the other names besides a snow globe gets you a

I’m part of the 99.33% of Dopers so far.
