In the recent stories about their GOP Convention (and how some people tried to carry guns into the convention hall, where the VP was) I saw the word for Utah natives spelled either Utahans or Utahns. The NYT used Utahns but wire services used Utahans. What is it?
Searches on the Official Web Site of the State of Utah produce 711 hits for “Utahns” but only 7 hits for “Utahans”.
Uters?
Utites?
Salt Lake City native here - bear that in mind when flaming.
Mormons?
[sub]Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all week.[/sub]
I’ve lived up in Northern Utah for about 2 months now, and “Utahn” appears to be the norm.

That’d be Shoshone, Nez Perce, et al…

Thank you I’m here all week as well.
[Joe Pesci voice]So, your honor, these two UTES…[/Joe Pesci voice]
O.K., someone’s going to laugh at me for this, but what about Utonian? There’s a Minnesotan, Californian, Iowan, why not a Utonian too?
Probably because ‘Utonia’ sounds like a bad sci-fi movie. Minnesota, California, and Iowa conveniently end with an ‘a’.
I thought they were called “Eutychas”. I’m sure I heard that phrase somewhere recently…
I believe there was a tribe there called the “Utes.” Also, the University of Utah sports teams are called the Utes.
Makes as much sense as calling people from Indiana “Hoosiers.”
FWIW
Actually, “Utes” might not be so bad a term, since the state’s name appears to originate from the Ute tribes, a couple bands which still have reservations in that state. The term is also the nickname of the University of Utah’s sports teams. Experience tells me that someone should ask the Utes first.
As far as science fiction goes, well, it might not be entirely out of place in the land of Moroni and Kolob.
[Fred Gwynn voice] Did you say “Utes”? [/Fred Gwynn voice]
Oooh. You smoked me on that one, rastahomie.
Well, in a way, so does Utah. It may not technically, but it does phonetically.
*And, I might add, I didn’t say ‘Utonia’, I said, “Utonian”. I’m not trying to be a bitch here, I’m just being specific.
I mean, I’m sitting here saying it out loud (And feeling like a total goober about doing it out loud too. I hope no one is walking by my apartment right now) and it sure sounds fine to me.
I’d say it sounds ‘better’, or more ‘right’, than Utes.

I guess I explained myself poorly. When I hear something like Iowan, Argentinian, Indian, Minnesotan, and so on, I habitually remove the n to derive the place name. ‘Utonian’ seems, to my uneducated ears, to be someone from Utonia.
(Yes, Canadians aren’t from Canadia, but I call them that anyway.)
I have a firend from Utah who uses “Utahoos” but I dunno if that’s just slang or not.
Utards?
