That “I can’t eat that” thread made me think of this, in part because I’m eating dinner right now.
Most people in my age group need to watch their sodium intake, and I am one of them - for the reverse reason. I have chronically below-normal sodium levels, and my father does too and so did his mother. Both of them have been/were hospitalized because of it (my grandmother almost died a couple times, too) so I put lots of extra salt on my food, especially this time of year.
Grandma spent her last few years in a nursing home, and after one hospitalization (I think it was the one where she arrived with a critically low level), he told me, “Next time I see her, I’m going to bring a bottle of salt tablet with me, give them to her nurse, and tell her to make sure my mother takes them!” I replied that it was a good idea, but it wouldn’t work because something like that has to be ordered by a doctor. IDK if she was ordered them, but Dad takes salt tablets and I do during the summer too.
I need to eat a protein-heavy diet due to a chronic deficiency caused by unknown metabolic reasons. Also chronically low levels of B vitamins, but I usually take a pill for that. Been this way for years.
As a side note, I also need to limit my sodium intake because of hypertension.
While I tend not to remember to do it…ever, between chronic migraines and two kidney stones most of my doctors (nephrologist, PCP, neurologist) have told me to drink more water. They don’t even ask me how much I currently drink, just tell me I should be drinking more.
I just (like a few seconds ago) mentioned that my neurologist has me on 400mg of B2 (Riboflavin). It’s 4 times the RDA and it seems to be somewhat new for treating migraines. When I first started it I had, what I thought were some side effects cropping up and I couldn’t find anything out about it since googling things like “400mg B2 side effects” or “High dosage b2 side effects” just got me results for ‘overdose symptoms’ since that’s what it is, an OD and it they all said ‘don’t worry, it’ll flush out of your body, you’ll just pee really bright yellow for a day or two’.
Magnesium supplements and megadoses of riboflavin have been used for this for many years. Like other OTC remedies, it’s not publicized as much as it should be.
For that matter, I take vitamin B6 because I knit and use it to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. I sure can tell when I don’t take it, because I wake up with numb, useless hands.
That’s what the neuro said (in fact I did the magnesium thing years ago (at his request)). But there’s very little on the internet WRT actual studies. Like I said, I had some possible side effects from it and couldn’t figure out if that’s what they were because I could find almost nothing on the internet about side effects from 400mg/day of B2 other than what to do in case of and overdose.
I’m still not sure if they’re related, but I just hit the three month mark, which is how long it takes for it to start working so I don’t want to go off it for a few months to see if my side effects go away, besides, I don’t think they’re related, just coincidental. It would just be nice to find something.
I’m hypoglycemic (or close enough to it that I need to eat as if I am). I need protein at each meal. It doesn’t have to be meat, but it does have to be enough grams of protein to equal a chunk of meat (not 1/4 cup of edamame, for example).
My perfect lunch for feeling good during the afternoon is a giant salad with a chuck of meat or fish on it, dressing on the side. Unfortunately, my perfect lunch for feeling good as I am eating it is a burger and fries.
