What do you say when silence falls over a group?

I’ve heard the following used. (It’s a line from Keats’ Ode to Autumn.)

And gathering swallows twittered in the skies.

It’s quiet… too quiet!

Unless your group of friends was at the University of Texas in the mid to late 90s, then I can confirm there was at least two groups of people who did this.

I vividly remember a situation many years ago… Our group of workers entered an elevator already half full of strangers from other departments. All were male. There was an awkward silence as the elevator moved between floors. Nobody said anything. Then my boss said, sotto voce, “Let go of my hand”. Much laughter ensued.

Related, to say something that results in silence is to express a conversation stopper.

The Russians would say: * a cop was born*,
implying a moment of silence after a tragic occurrence.
It reflects the general distrust of cops there.

“Urban1a just walked into the room”.

LOL

Yeah, no. This was Chicago, early 90s, high school (and none went there for college). Interesting. Wonder how known this was. Seeing the 4 upvotes and 10 downvotes on the Urbandictionary page makes me think this was pretty esoteric.

Look at the last person to speak.

“Well you pretty much killed the conversation there”.

I say “Atlantis…” because in college I was in a group of people once and that happened, and she told us that it means we’re thinking of lost Atlantis. I am like 99% sure she was serious.

Atlantis…

“Crickets…”
