What do you think about Tatoos?

Same here. I voted for “nothing wrong with them.”

Some tattoos look great. I’ve seen beautiful, artistic tattoos that suit a person perfectly and enhance their overall look. I’ve seen tats that weren’t especially well done and seemed cheap or trashy. Some people can have lots of tattoos and look incredible, some people have one small one that looks stupid.

I have a tattoo that I got when I was in college. I don’t regret it at all, but I’m not tempted to get another.

Yes, but my opinion (and I assume the opinion of others) has changed over the last year or two. As it becomes more mainstream to be heavily tattooed, my judgement focused more on the quality and thought behind the skin art rather than the fact that they were heavily tattooed.

I don’t have an opinion on having tattoos in general. I will judge them individually. I appreciate a good one and I am generally amused by really bad ones. I’m annoyed by the ones I know someone spent a lot of money on while complaining about not having money for their rent. I know it’s not the tattoo’s fault, but there ya go.

Similarly, have you ever noticed that tattooed folks never criticize those without body art?

Where is the “a whole bunch of tattoos make me wonder about IV drug abuse and hepatitis C status” option?

I like them, when done well and not on the face or hands. I have one on the back of my shoulder so it rarely is seen in public. I’m Facebook friends with the artist who’s going to do my next one, on my lower leg to cover the ugly veins. She’s an artist and people travel from all over to have her do their tatts. That reminds me I need to book an appointment as she’s booked solid for six months.

Oh, another friend had one done on her foot in some weird tradition, when in a bar in the Philippines. Don’t do that.

I have no gate key when it comes to why people get tattoos. I boggles my mind that anyone would layout that kind of money for something so plebeian. It’s like the $300 shower clogs that you can get to wear with your $1200 sweats. WTF?
Is trailer trash chic the best we can do for a national aesthetic?

Don’t like them and have never seen one that I thought looked good. But I won’t judge people for having one.

Seeing as the only answer close to that has needless crap about The Divine, there is no answer for me.

I would have voted for option 1 if the second sentence had not made me feel like a bigot. It is possible to just dislike tatoos without religious reasons, you know.

So, I can’t bring myself to vote.

But the answer is: they never look any good.

Oh, I know!

Personally I find people without tattoos to be unattractive, especially men. It’s incredibly emasculating for a man not to have one. I would never date a tattoo-less man!

Don’t these people think about how ugly their skin is going to look when they’re 80? A tattooed man is beautiful, I don’t see why these un-tattooed men choose not to reveal that potential beauty. Skin is so often blotchy and spotty and veiny- all people really ought to cover that up with some attractive ink. God invented tattoo artists, it’s a shame when people don’t seek them out.

Charlie, she is hardly covered in tattoos. If that shook you up, you need to get out more. I’ve seen much more coverage in the Midwest town I live in. I didn’t see a single one above her neck.

And BTW, I’m in the to each his own category when it comes to tattoos.

Sure they do. “boring” “conservative” 'afraid".

I think it was the starving kid that shook him up.

I’ve hung out in tattoo parlors, attended conventions. I have friends with near full coverage. I dated a woman once who was covered from the neck down pretty much. The modded folks I have been with talked about the same things most people talk about, but I never heard anyone diss the unadorned.

Exactly.

I mean: i think they are ugly and foolish, but i used to have a grudging respect for the rebelliousness.

Neither my husband nor I have any tattoos, though they’re ok on other people. It’s just that we already have enough fascinating body parts for our purposes.

The Minneapolis radio station did a bit last summer while broadcasting from the Minnesota State Fair. One of the DJs (hosts) would give a one-word clue, and the other one would try to guess what they’re looking at.

For example: “Muffin-top”.
Answer: fat lady pushing a baby stroller

So they come up with this one: “Unemployable”
Answer: neck tattoo (which they guessed with the one word)

When I see my students come to class with heavy tattoos I worry about their future employablility. Our nursing faculty has it much harder: local hospitals don’t allow nurses to have exposed tattoos so I see lots of nursing students wearing some pretty large band-aids.

Is there a logic to this, or is it just an example of somebody using their power to enforce a preference?

In general, “you shouldn’t do X because someone who has power over you and feels differently might react with Y” is a poor and fearful way to go through life.

Tattoos are beautiful, and I love seeing them on people!
This was not an option on your poll.
