Defacing Beautiful Bodies With Tattoos.

Why do otherwise beautiful people have to deface their otherwise beautiful bodies, with graffiti? I am talking about tattoos.

Take NBA star John Wall as just one example. Here is a picture of him without tattoos. Just look at the smooth, beautiful physique.

Now he has tattoos on almost every part of his body, including a Mickey Mouse tattoo on his leg. A Mickey Mouse tattoo on his leg! Try explaining that one, when you’re forty.

Surely I am not alone in thinking this. Does anyone agree with me on this one? And does anyone else agree that tattoos are a bad idea in general, for the reasons I just gave, and more?

These at least are my humble opinions. What are yours?

:):)

OMG. If you’d like answers, why don’t you search any of the gazillion other threads that are exactly the same.

I agree for the most part, but I don’t think a lot of other Dopers will.

We’re doing this again?..

Fine. But under protest.

They do it to piss off anti-tattoo people.

People tattooing themselves is almost as much of a travesty as someone allowing themselves to get fat or scarred or old, so they’re no longer smooth and beautiful. It’s good to know you spend as many hours in the gym as John Wall does, so that you’re not preventing someone else from enjoying the sight of your muscled physique. Imagine how silly you’d look like at forty if you didn’t keep yourself in prime shape with a well regimented skin care system.

I agree with you in that I don’t find tattoos attractive. I also don’t like tomatoes, or modern R&B music. As a result I don’t have any tattoos, don’t eat tomatoes and don’t listen to R&B music when I can avoid it. But I don’t form a negative opinion of those who do listen to modern R&B or ask how anyone could possibly eat a tomato given that they are inherently gross.

Different people have different tastes. That’s what makes the world an interesting place.

As someone who is running out of un-inked skin (not counting my face/neck/hands), I’ll just point out that:

  • My ink is for my enjoyment. I never once considered you.
  • I’ve never heard someone with tattoos complain about people who choose to forego self adornment. It’s always the other way around.

I own an SUV. So does my Wife. Own a pick up truck too. But I guess those threads are pretty much over with

Meh… I think tattoos are a waste of time and money. But whatever floats your boat.

Oh. But…

I know a girl that got a full tattoo on her hand. Full glove I guess. A single mom that lives at home with her mom. Not sure where she got the money. :smack:

A nephew used money given to him by his folks for rent/living used the money to get a big tattoo.:smack::smack:

I don’t get it either. But doesn’t affect me in the least.

Good luck finding a job when you’re released.

Heh. I meant that my face/neck/hands are un-inked and likely to remain that way, but as the owner of the business I don’t have concerns about being employed/employable.

Cool for you. I don’t really care providing it doesn’t put financial burden on you or others.

I knew I should have added a ;).

I’m fine with them. I don’t have any, but many of my friends and family members do. And, I once spent a very nice evening with a young woman who had a few tattoos. Maybe that’s why I think they can be very hot, on the right person.

Their body- their choice. I’m blessedly tattoo-free, though, and am planning on remaining that way.

I don’t follow football at all, but I think the Sports Illustrated photos of Colin Kaepernick are some of the most beautiful photos of the human body that I’ve ever seen, tattoos and all.

Different people like different things. Is there really any other answer? Why does this topic come up all the freaking time?

How do you feel about makeup and other temporary ways of altering one’s appearance? Differently than you feel about (permanent) tattoos?

How about earrings, which often require permanent holes in the earlobes?

Tattoos are just one form of body modification, which is ubiquitous. If you shudder at the sight of the urban rebel with full-sleeve tattoos and plugged earlobes, you best not venture out your quiet white-bread suburb, because you’ll find all of that and much more as you wander the globe. Tatoos are just the beginning: you’ll also see ritual scarification, pierced ears/lips/nasal septa, lip plates, tooth sharpening, hair removal, and on and on.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you find that someone’s tattooed body is not beautiful, go ahead and look away.

In part because this board skews older and in the lifetime of older dopers tattoos were for carnies, criminals and sailors ( also criminal carnies that used to be sailors ). There really is a bit of a generational divide with some. Not me personally - I think well done tattoos are kinda neat. But whereas today well over a third of 18-25 year old cohort have tattoos, when I was 18-25 it was probably 5% or less ( it is over 10% in my cohort now, but that is after decades of catch up and rising popularity ).

Seriously. I have tattoos. They are for me. My employer doesn’t have an issue with it, but I appreciate your concern
