I’m interested in knowing how difficult these questions (Youtube) are from a non-Canadian perspective. I, as a Canadian, got them all, but to be honest I had to take an educated guess at the first and third questions, but they were educated guesses!
Better put this in a spoiler, so others can see the questions first:
I knew Montreal and Moose Jaw, and guessed Banff. I should have known Victoria, but of course I said Vancouver, and I don’t think I was alone in that. I would have never gotten Stratford.
As a canadiophile and college-level quiz bowl participant with a print of Olympic posters in my living room, I would’ve gotten… one right, the $400 (last) one. :o 1992 + Olympics made me think of Calgary (even knowing that velodromes are used in the summer)
I’ve never heard of Stratford and knew enough Ontario cities to guess one of them
I didn’t remember Victoria was the capital of BC and not Vancouver
I blanked on Banff (though I’ve heard of it before)
If it had been 500 Questions instead of Jeopardy!, though, I would’ve gotten three (or maybe four) of them.
The hint regarding Stratford relies on knowing that William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in England. When the clue contained a reference to a city in Ontario on the Avon river the answer was evident. And besides, it’s the birthplace of Justin Bieber! (Ouch! Stop hitting me!)
I got them all, despite being American. Go, me!
I didn’t know about the swans, though I have been to that town; figured it out from “textual evidence.”
The national park was an educated guess.
The other three I was pretty sure about.
The first one threw me because Victoria is on Vancouver Island, so I didn’t think it was on the Trans-Canada highway. That left me guessing Edmonton, but I wasn’t very happy with the guess.
I had no idea about the swans in Stratford, and didn’t pick up on the Shakespeare connection to the Avon part of the clue.
ETA: I also missed the fact that they mentioned Ontario. Sigh
Beats me. You can read about the history on Wikipedia.
It’s a beautiful, quaint little town. Of course Ireland has hundreds of towns more quaint and beautiful, but Niagara-on-the-Lake is unique for Ontario.
Montreal and Moose Jaw were easy. I guessed Banff. I should have known Stratford as the Shakespeare festival is quite well known in Michigan. Instead I was thinking capital cities for some reason and guessed Toronto. Victoria was a hard one, like almost everyone else I guessed Vancouver.
I got two and I live in Montreal. I think it’s a little pathetic that this is on CBC right now tbh. It’s pretty sad if you have to derive a sense of superiority from the fact that foreigners don’t know you’re unimportant cities* on the basis of somewhat cryptic clues. You can’t fault people for not realizing that the TCH starts on an island. The answers were bad though in that the military guy kept naming cities that weren’t in the right province.
*one notable exception is that question about the Olympic velodrome, how can you not get that?
