And we never needed Fire Drills. The handbook said “When a fire alarm goes off, head outside immediately by the nearest exit”. There were maps if “nearest” was confusing.

I strongly suspect that, in a college dorm, the purpose of a fire drill is not so much making sure everyone knows what to do if a fire alarm sounds, as it is making sure everyone takes a fire alarm seriously.

As a parent, I’d use this as a teachable moment with (my wife and) step-daughter, and remind her that she does have a right to privacy… etc etc.

Wow, a “teachable moment” with my wife, how patriarchal of you. The only thing I teach my wife about is using new apps on her phone.

And I spoke to my two older daughters, both also in college, they both have/had fire drills in their dorms. Maybe you should consider the possibility that just handing dorm residents a map wasn’t working.
