What doctor should i see??

hiyall,

this is a medical question-i would like to know what type of doctor to go to for my problem-it is a little weird. it seems that i am abnormally sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. that is, i tend to have abnormal physiological reactions. in the winter, my nose is always runny and drippy, even when i am not at all cold. i have not been sick in years and have no symptoms of the average cold, but even when i am in my house with a sweater on my nose is runny. in fact, there have been times when i felt very hot and overheated and my nose is runny.

on the other hand, in the summer, i am almost always uncomfortable one way or another. i feel overheated easily, i sweat profusely and easily and it takes some time to get used to new temperatures. there is no ‘pain’ involved in any of this, but it has been going on too long and it is becoming a majorly discomforting nuisance. i am not overweight, i take vitamins, i exercise-so it must be something else.

My question is this: does this sound hormonal or neurological? i am guessing something hormonal/endocrine. should i see a endocrinologist or neurologist? my regular doctor hasn’t been much help, but he did test for some thyroid stuff which came back fine. thanks for reading, let me know what u think!

Start with a Family Physician or Internist. They can guide you to the appropriate specialist if it is necessary.

And if your regular doctor isn’t addressing your questions, ask again. If still not answers, ask another doctor.

IMHO I would start at an EENT (eye, ears, nose and throat specialist. If he/she can’t help you then I would try an Allergist. If that can’t help you ask him/her for a referral to someone who can.

Maybe a dermatologist can help.

thx for ur replies…

as for an allergist, it really can’t be anything related to allergies because i do not have any of the usual symptoms related to that:headaches(i rarely get headaches); runny, itchy eyes, swelling, redness, sore throat, etc-i basically never get those things. EENT might be able to help, but remember, my body reacts differently at different times of the day, which leads me to believe it might be hormonal.

the thing is this, though: i know it is stupid i but do not have insurance right now. i went to my gp a couple of times, and while i know he is doing his job, i feel he is making no progress. he really doesn’t want to hear about my problem in detail, he just wants to run lots of tests to be safe. GPs really aren’t in the position to ask lots of questions and hunt down the problem, there is a protocol for him to follow.

i just need a specialist who is willing to hear everything i have to say in detail and ask me questions(the gp never asks questions).
again, thanks for looking! i appreciate it!

Thenyou need a different primary care doc who can make some sort of progress, or at least explain it all to you better. You might guess the right specialist for you, but then again you probably won’t, at least the first time you try.

I would agree that you should try to find a new GP. Even when it seems obvious what you have, I still would rather have someone who presumably knows what s/he is doing make the call.

In my HMO, I believe the only specialist I can visit without a referral is a dermatologist.

Of course, I’m male so I don’t pay attention if I can pick my own OB/GYN.
