When I was 9 or 10 I had to have some baby teeth pulled out and they gave me nitrous oxide (I suppose that’s what it’s called?) I remember feeling detached from having my teeth pulled out, though horribly horribly depressed. In fact I was crying the entire time, thinking about how one day my parents would be dead. Everyone thought I was crying because I was in pain, and they told me it shouldn’t hurt. Odd that it caused that reaction, since it’s known as laughing gas. I also recall that my hands and feet felt tingly and I felt like I was floating, ever since then I have guessed that being high feels something like that.
I get bad reactions to normal doses of Nyquil and Robitussin, they make me feel like I’m sinking, dying, at the same time as speeding up, hearing voices, feeling psychotic. Supposedly you only get that sort of side effect if you OD on them, I’ve been told I’m probably allergic to one of the ingredients. I can imagine that that’s a sort of high as well.
I did try weed on 3 occasions, in my “wild Baltimore days”, just out of curiosity. I’m one of those people who got no effect from it at all. It wasn’t pleasant since I am a non-smoker, and I decided that if I want a buzz I’ll just drink, since it’s more guaranteed and doesn’t burn my throat.
I’m amazed that nobody has mentioned how good music sounds. On a normal day, it could be a song that causes you to run flailing at the radio button. When high, you can suddenly appreciate all the layers and tones, suddenly sinking deeper into the music. Several hours after the buzz is gone, music will still seem to sound better.
Intelligent conversation is not possible, or if it is done, contains 50% "what"s. Creative meandering stories spill out as easily as breathing. 2 stoned people can stare at a campfire for a half hour with out saying a word to each other, yet still consider it fun.
I never smoked much, only a handful of times, it always when a friend would pull a joint he stole from his pothead uncle. Really.
Anyway, the onset always felt like someone was slowly pulling a hat onto my head. And the sensation got stronger as the full effect came over me. I remember reaching up to my head a lot and stealing the occasional look in the mirror. And the munchies came on strong a couple times too.
Do a couple Vicoprofen, walk down to the nearest bar. Have a couple beers and a shot of Sambuca. Head out to the parking lot with the local hemp monger. Smoke a fatty. Better go back in the bar for a couple more beers. Head over to the local bump monger’s house for few lines of coke. Have couple more beers. Stumble home giggling to yourself. Lay on the couch with your headphones listening to any of the early Zep albums. Have another beer and finish the roach in your ashtray. Travel to happy places and never have to leave your living room.
eesh, i got stoned my first time, and it was really giggly, kinda lightheaded, and since i was at school, i was a lil bit paranoid that someone would notice. but they didnt, or they at least didnt say…
i’ve tried all different types of weed and hashish, and i’ve felt everything from philosophical to just plain giggly. i find my short-term memory goes very fast, and i tend to find the simplest things amusing
Or you might record it and find out that it sounds like “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver”, which I believe were the first two albums that The Beatles recorded after being introduced to pot by Bob Dylan.
I’ve driven stoned literally thousands of times and have never had an accident, and only one ticket (10 MPH over the speed limit on a deserted Interstate). I look the Cisco CCNA exam stoned out of my gourd and got a 978/1000. Probably over half of my SDMB posts have been while stoned, but I haven’t acted sufficiently idiotic in them to get banned yet.
I also drive stoned, usually when I have a veeeeeery long trip in front of me. I drive from New Jersey to Maine at least twice a year, and I’d never be able to make it through Connecticut sober!
Thanks for all the answers, everyone! Now I can accurately describe how about forty different people feel when stoned. Maybe I should write a book? Yeah, that’s it a book … I can write a whole book about–HEY!! Wonder Woman’s on TV!!! space out
The first time I got stoned, I remember staring at my hand while watching some pothead movie (Dazed and Confused maybe?), and just laughing. The second time, we watched Jay and Silent Bob Strike back…to this day, I don’t know the plotline of that movie. Is there one?
Time seemed to slow down, and everything was a lot funnier than it is in reality. And, it was Christmastime, so there was a tree up…I remember that being the cooest thing in the world. Yeah, I was out of it…
I completely enjoy being stoned and the way it affects my reasoning skills. Sundry, urbane stuff suddenly gets interesting. Colors seem brighter and more vivid. Music is more entertaining, art is especially fascinating to behold. Conversation turns to philosophical matters, you feel more at ease with your place in the universe which is suddenly much more clear. Euphoria at times. A general sense of well-being. Oh, and no nasty physical addiction to deal with. If you can say no to coffee you can say no to pot.
*Bongmaster, if you ever happen to be in New York City, I highly recommend going to the Metropolitan Museum as high as you feel comfortable being. I never realized how friggin’ huge the original painting of Washington crossing the Delaware was!!
It’s been many years for me too, but I was very sensitive to it’s effects. The first time was horrible. I was so ripped that I stuck a nail through my foot while climbing down from our tree fort (it wasn’t very high off the ground). I was so paranoid of being caught that I waited hours before I went inside the house for help. I was 13. Not fun.
Later on, I did find that it increased my awareness and senses when I was practicing with the band, playing frisbee etc. Mysteriously, you could understand all the ‘true’ meanings in Pink Floyd’s lyrics in a real and personal way…but could never remember them afterwards. Odd that.
However, to understand the far reaching effects of pot, one must listen to all the episodes of , “The Voice: The Evil Weed” produced by Two Minute Danger Theater. Then. Then, you will know.
About 20 years ago I had really weird results a couple of times when I smoked. I felt like I was no longer part of my body, that my arms and legs were coming off, and that I had no sense of space so I could hardly navigate my way around the little two bedroom hut I lived in without crashing into the doorframes. In another case I could have sworn I heard Gregorian chants–never mind that I’d never listened to them–and saw the face of my cat superimposed over the moon. Someone told me the er, uh, pipeweed was probably laced with LSD or PCP in those cases. Both incidents were rather unsettling and discouraged me from further experimentation.
I’ve only been stoned ONCE - like the fifth time I smoked And the last, actually. It was really really nice. I had this feeling like my whole body was outlined. Like if you were looking at me, I’d swear you could see this Happy Aura. Like a cartoon drawing. I was very relaxed, and giggly, and paired with a little red wine, it actually made me horny.
My SO asked if I would please not smoke anymore, so I don’t.
The few times I got high off pot, it did this weird thing to my eyes where I couldn’t focus and my brain didn’t register what it was seeing until a few seconds after I looked at it. The result of this was that I got incredibly motion sick, so I just tried to close my eyes and lay as still as possible to avoid throwing up. I know you’re not supposed to get sick to your stomache when smoking pot, but I do. I am prone to motion sickness anyway, and it made me wonder if other people vulnerable to motion sickness get this way too. When I wasn’t feeling like I was going to throw up, it did make me laugh at things that normally wouldn’t have been funny.
