Sure we can all agree that the original trilogy was great was great. But the prequels?
So, what does Lucas deserve: thanks for the good movies he made, as ass kicking for messing up the prequels, or to be shot for destroying the whole thing with his prequels?
I would like to see his next movie bomb at the box office. He is putting out substandard crap and I wish people would not shell out money to see it until Lucas actually tries to make a good movie.
Is it possible that the quality of the original series had less to do with Lucas’ input than is widely believed?
That said, don’t thank the man. Don’t encourage him, the last thing we need is to convince him that we really want 3 more star wars movies of this calibre.
A kick in the pants and a face full of mud!!!
A place in a future edition of Guinness “Destroyer of the Most Valuable Theatrical Franchise.”
I don’t. Unless we’re talking about comparison to the prequels, which isn’t saying much.
Just out of curiousity, how old are you?
I also don’t agree that the original trilogy was “great”. The very first movie I really liked. The next two I enjoyed less and less. I haven’t bothered with the prequels. If they are as bad as everyone says they are I really hope the last one bombs at the box office. (and by the way, tho what difference it makes I don’t know, I’m 50).
Like I said, it’s mostly just curiousity. I love the original trilogy of movies to death; but on an objective level I can recognize they are not exactly pinnacles of filmmaking. I have noticed that people in my age group (I’m 28) tend to be the most vocal fans where people significantly older or younger tend not to quite see what the fuss is about.
I think the OP needed more spoiler warnings.
I’ve got a fever. And the only cure… is MORE spoilers!
I really liked the first movies. I went through a long Star Wars phase, and now I’m content to just read the books and play the games (although the Puzz-3d Star Destroyer still gets a place of triumph over the TV stand, because that was a damn hard puzzle).
I think part of Lucas’s failure to make a good story out of what he has is partly due to (in my opinion) that so many other people have done it better than Lucas - in his own setting! When the movies trot out a new character who has been set up to be great, I’ll expect something great out of it. When that something doesn’t happen (coughJangocough), I feel let down. Cheated.
He deserves to get to heaven, and then receive an ass-whupping from Akira Kurasawa.
Or if you’re feeling mean, he has to go to hell and make movies with NO CGI AT ALL!!! I bet watching one of the prequels sans-CGI (which I think is a special feature on the DVDs for some scenes) would be hilarious.
I’ll also take a page from Journeyman. Who directed Empore, wide considered the best in the series? Not Lucas.
It all depends upon what he decides to do next. If he puts out THX1138 on DVD and the original Star Wars trilogy, untouched (except for the standard digital enhancements and not the “Special Edition” crap) on DVD, then he deserves at least respect. If he doesn’t do either of those, then he deserves nothing but contempt.
